Have my TV hooked up via an optical output cable to my Yamaha. No sound when I turned it on this morning. I have searched here and elsewhere for hours to no avail

Here's what I have done to try and figure out the issue:
1. tried 2 other optical cables and can see the light coming out of the end of all of them (including the original) - nothing. Plugged these cables into the other optical inputs for CD, DVR - nothing. Conclusion, its not the optical output from the tv or the cables
2. Yamaha plays music through my speakers when hooked up via AUX input. Conclusion, sound output still works
3. Sound plays through tv speakers. Conclusion, its not a signal issue from my cable or firestick

So, I figured there is an issue with the optical inputs somewhere in the receiver. Is this the logical conclusion or am I missing something?

Solutions:
1. reset Yamaha to factory. Have read that this may solve the problem. But the factory reset procedure I have seen (press Direct and power on) does not work and I cant find any alternate reset procedures (tried unplugging) so am at a loss now

Any suggestions pls? Other than the reset procedure (which I cant get to work) the only alternative is to take it to a pro to fix (is it even worth it?) or get an new receiver

Thanks for any help/ideas

That is an old prologic receiver, that must be around 20 years old. It is not worth repair and parts are likely not available.

We are now in the era of HDMI and I suspect your whole system needs updating.

LOL yes I take your point. However it suit my purpose pretty well and although I like newer stuff, I hate not being able to figure out whats wrong with it. I was just hoping that I could at least figure out why it wont reset to factory and see if that fixes it. If not then I am fully prepared to get something new

I have a newer TCL 65 hooked up to it with cable and a Firestick 4k Max. Output is via my B&W 602s. Now those are old! But again, I like the sound, they look nice and I havent found a reason to change them. Also have an SVS sub in the corner

I mostly stream movies/shows/sports so if you have suggestions for a new mid range receiver, I am all ears

Thanks

What TV and did you reset that ?
Many new sets even are famous for sound issues.
Pretty doubtful that all of your optical inputs went bad.

I didnt think of that, thanks.

Its a TCL 65, maybe 3-4 yrs old. Didnt even know you can reset TVs so will look into the procedure

Agree it seems weird that all the opticals went bad. I thought maybe they all fed into one output and that went bad but I know nothing about how it works

Also check the sets audio output settings.
Sometimes tv sets will just go bonkers, especially after an update.

I suspect that the digital converter board has gone bad. That receiver only has digital connections via optical. So I suspect that is why it won't reset as well. It has very old technology and I would bet it has seen its day.

That's entirely possible.
Seems like the only thing he hasn't done is use a source with a confirmed working optical output...like a cd player or game console.

If he gets no optical output with a known good source, then yes his Yamaha is bad.

Well I turned the whole thing back on just now and set the tv audio output back from speakers to optical and it works! I have no idea why. I turned it off last night and did nothing different this morning. So must be a glitch somewhere, either the TV audio processing or the digital inputs

I realized I do have a BR dvd player that i havent used in a while with an optical output. So I will hook that up today as well so if it happens again then I can try that source to narrow down the problem - thanks for that thought

Anyways, its working so I am inclined to leave it alone for now. Its a mystery I guess

Many thanks for the advice

Bargain sets like TCL and Hisense have serious issues with sound output...they can be fine one moment and not work the next.
My Hisense U8H has drop dead picture quality, but the EARC has never worked. Good thing I don't need or use it.

So, you are good to go...just keep an eye on the TCL. Your Yamaha is fine.

As @isolar8001 mentioned, newer TVs can be tripped up by one thing or another and change their audio output setting on their own. My LG TV has done such a thing many times.

When there is no audio or audio is coming only from the TV when using an ARC/eARC or optical connection, always check the TV audio output settings first to see if they have changed for some unknown reason.

I did check the audio output from the TV and switched it back and forth about 10 times yesterday. Always worked through the TV speakers but not the stereo. It just worked this morning for whatever reason

Anyways I have some good knowledge for next time!

Thanks
