I write this not for your benefit, because you already know everything. In direct response to your above post,

True Dolby does pass through analog!!. I pass to my 5803 from an A35 via analog. Sheesh. Perhaps it would prudent for the the mods to cleanse your threads of all the misinformation you so often regurgitate so this site does not become rife with your fodder. How old are you anyway?
Sorry, you're passing analog through analog.
TrueHD can only pass through HDMI or iLink.
Anything passed through analog has been converted, hence TrueHD cannot pass through analog. TrueHD is decoded to PCM and then converted to analog. Pretty much any forum member here should be able to explain this to you.

Alternately you can contact Richard Dressler at Dolby if you need further explanation of what happens when you utilize analog for lossless audio.

Doby is simply saying that Dolby TrueHD is decoded inside the HD player and converted to analog (it's not quite that simplistic, but the result is the same none the less). However, this is going to occur at some point anyway. If you can send the Dolby TrueHD bitstream to the receiver it will eventually be converted to analog for output, where this process occurs is typically irrelevant as both receivers and HD players have good conversion processes.

Also, enough with the defensive bull crap. And definitely, enough of the huge bold text. How old are you?

What doby is "simply saying" is wholly incorrect seth. Yes, the result is the same. And I don't see where doby said or implied that Dolby True is decoded in the player and then sent via analog. I see where I repeatedly inferred that, but he could not catch it. He is just wrong and spreading mistruths on HD audio signals.

Toshiba to give up on HD

That's right. I said it first, and I said it to everyone. :p:p This is at least from a credible source (NHK in Japan announced this a day or so ago), so it is with mixed emotions that I supply this inevitable link (at least it's not from that highly acclaimed rag The Hollywood Reporter some other astute member reads...it's from a truly credible source :p):

Actually you didn't infer anything of the sort, what you said was that no Blu-ray players are capable of utilizing TrueHD and analog outputs, when there are more Blu-ray model players that do allow for TrueHD decoding and outputting through analog outputs than HD DVD players.

Here, let me help you out:

The fact of the matter is BD is frazzled with all their different profiles, HD audio isn't available over analog
Do we have to scrap our receivers to get DD+ and True? Not with HD. HD passes DD+ and True via analog. There is no BD player that passes DD+ and True via analog. I hate conspicuous consumption and the throw away mentality.
That's two different posts you've lied about whether or not Blu-ray players can decode TrueHD through analog. You should reasess where the misinformation is coming from.

Do we need to count the models again?

  • Pioneer BDP-94HD
  • Pioneer BDP-95HD
  • Pioneer BDP-HD50
  • Sharp BD-HP20U
  • Sony BDP-S1
  • Sony BDP-S500
  • Sony BDP-S2000ES
  • Denon DVD-3800BDCI
  • Panasonic DMP-BD10
  • Samsung BD-P1200
  • Samsung BD-P1400
  • Philips BDP-7100

There are 12 models that will decode TrueHD and output through analog. You said there were none.

That's a real credible source you got there doby. Not to call you or anyone here challenged, but that's the kind of paper I wouldn't even wipe my cat's a## with! :p There's no news flash in that article, and the reporter is simply taki Jodi Sally's words and misconstruing them. Please tell me my fellow Audioholic members do not rely on this pissant paper for their news and information. Please. Oh, the humanity. :p
C'mon....man.

You know better than that. That site is only a host. That same story can be found all over the web. It's like finding the exact same AP story linked onto dozens of websites.

Holy crap, you guys are still going??? I think we all agree there is little difference operationally (with respect to SQ and PQ) between BR and HD-DVD. I even think most of us would be happy with either. But what many here are saying is that we are just glad the format war is nearing a close so we can move on to more important things like better manufacturer competition, lower prices, and more widespread market share. I just want to able to buy any movie in a high-def format, I don't want it to matter who produces it.

Format wars like this only serve to alienate the general public, and lower the chance that the surviving format will ever see their way into widespread use.

Amen to that, couldn't have set it better myself. Let's move on so that I can start my blu-ray collection. Can't wait.

Looks like Samsung are already aware of what's going on with HD DVD:

Samsung Electronics Focusing More on Blu-ray Format

By Kim Yoo-chul
Staff Reporter

Samsung Electronics is expected to accelerate its ongoing efforts to strengthen Blu-ray products since Toshiba virtually pulled the plug on its HD DVD products.

"Samsung is expected to show more interests in Blu-ray products than rival HD DVDs,’’ according to a Samsung official on Sunday.

Industry sources have said Toshiba is highly likely to shut down its HD DVD business early this week, ending the "survival game’’ over the next-generation format against Sony- and Samsung-led Blu-ray technology.

Samsung officials have declined to further comment. However, industry insiders said the company has secured a solid momentum to propel its products armored with next-generation formats.

"Samsung, which has been adopting a dual-strategy for both Blu-ray and HD DVD products, is likely to cut the HD DVD portion because of aggressive marketing and closer industry connections over the technology,’’ a market expert said.

Yes i am eyeing U-571 for $12.20. I used to own it on D-theater DVHS. Like to see if there is any improvement in audio and video. D-theater still has higher video bitrate than even double-layer blu-ray

I was on the way home from work today and I came across this sign. Writing on the wall if you will...
I too see that it is dead. This is coming from a very satisfied HD-DVD supporter... but I'll be switching apparently. SONY, you finally get the prize!

I'll tell you what I find really sad; I was at Best Buy today and they still dedicate almost exactly the same amount of space to HD-DVD as they do for BluRay! BB's higher ups have already announced that they'll push only BluRay going forward. Yet no firesales on HD, no surge in the amount of available BRD products.

I have an HD-DVD player but no BRD machine. Eventually I'll get one, and since I only have four or five HD-DVD discs it's not really any big loss to me. It's a bit sad though, since HD-DVD came to market essentially complete and ready-for-prime-time while BluRay is still not there yet.

I'll probably give it six months and if BRD still exists I'll probably jump in. Til then I'll watch HD content from my brother's Xbox and Direct TV rig.
