I was going to wait out the hd format war but read about the $98 deal and headed to wmart about 3pm after work. Had 5 on floor and 15 in back with no line. Called wife and told her the deal I had read about was real. She said get two! So I did. No waf factor here. I'll put one in the br for the 50in plasma and the other in my rig to be used with pj/7ft.! I was in the market for a new dvd player and was considering the oppo 980. Well...$98 for a great upconverting/hd dvd is a no brainer. Sure I would love the xa2 but two a2's for 2 bills is fantastic.

Hey, Buckeye. Not sure how it would work. I bought them on separate tickets so there would only be one per recpt. I thought about buying a bunch, but figured I could go back and pick more up if needed. I asked the sales guy how long the price was good. He was not sure, but thought it was good until Sun. I only picked up a couple extras for the good folks here if someone missed out.
I got copies of the free offer as well.
Clerk at my wmart told me, after I asked, that the low price is just for today Fri/Nov 2. Well, yesterday as it's now after midnight eastern. You central and western area folks better get out there now.

So I went to one of two Wal-Mart at about 7:20 a.m. strolled in and got my first hd-dvd player and a bottle of Drano for my bathroom sink. They still had about 6 left and were not concerned about the 8 a.m. start time for the sale. I left after making my purchase and drove about 4 miles to the other Wal-Mart and purchased another HD-dvd player and a laptop. This store was a lot busier and they were strict. They made everyone wait in the electronics section until 8 a.m. before letting us check-out only at the electronics section. Still trying to decide if I want to keep the laptop though. I bought it for my girlfriend and I'm not sure if she will use it. She's in school though so she definately has a reason to use it. I'm just tired of sharing my laptop though.

I bought a couple of extras for my fellow Audioholics that could not find them. If you still want one, you can PM me. One of the local Wally Worlds still had a whole gondola end full of them tonight on the way home:confused: Guess folks down here in SC may still be behind the times after all:eek: Well, some of 'em, anyway.:p
can you pm me with a shipping cost insurance included to 38133?

and if ever, what would be your preferred payment method?

thanks....

I did manage to get a HD-A2 this morning for the 98.00 sale price.
I stopped at a Walmart in the next town, really just wasting time till my son got done with Band practice.
They had a few left. I asked one of the clerks why now. She said they finally went on sale at 3PM yesterday. 2 hours after I was at the local store. Something about pressure on ( or from) their home office. ????

I'm a happy camper now.

Again, thanks to Duke for the offer to sell me one of his.
Hopefully some one else will take advantage of his offer.

BTW, I did ask about buying extra at this Wally World, no dice.

Sold out

I unfortunatetly had a conference call at 8am and they were sold out by the time I could get to a walmart in my area (yeah all 10 of them). But since I called pretty much everyone I knew that had a HDTV I talked at least 10 of my friends who picked one up. I think this with Black friday is going to be a big push for HD-DVD.

I contacted the local Magnolia (we have a few Magnolia stores separate from Best Buy here) and he said they had one left....turned out to be open box (which means a full factory warranty), but he is selling it to me for $80 :)
Just in case your receipt reflects it being an open box purchase, that might pose a problem if you want to file for the 5 free discs rebate with that purchase. It says no open box buys on the form, so if getting the rebate was important, you might want to take it back and get the A3 deal.

I had been waiting the format war out, but grabbed a A2 at Wally World figuring if Blu-ray wins I have a decent upconverting DVD player and a sunk $100. No line, walked in around 9:20am there were 4 left.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Stopped at the local Walmart today.
They had plenty of the HD-A2's in stock.
The sign read $185.00.
I asked the Walmart electronics guru:rolleyes: what the deal was.
He rather sheepishly told me that the Wisconsin stores, due to state law, were not permitted to sell the players under cost.

Can anyone confirm this BS law?

For a hundred bucks I was going to take the leap to HD-DVD. For 2 hundred; not so much.

Damn I'm mad.
Where are you going with that? Is it because of the Quote?

Umm, No. Sorry.:)
Actually just before hitting the Submit button I did consider putting in a disclaimer.
Sheepish means timid or shy. Not really you.;)
Wasn't going anywhere with it.

I've met him...I don't think most people would be in a rush to take anything outside with him :)
Aw come on, I may be big, but I'm a lover not a fighter....

At least most of the time. ;)

Uh, I'm over 60. You wanna take that outside with me?!

LOL.
I just asked the guy at work if he watched any HD-DVD's yet, and he said, "No. I haven't even opened the box yet."

See, that's exactly what I'm talking about!!!! The guy's not serious about home theater. He was probably just getting one for the hell of it!!! Oh well, I've got the A3 anyway, so it all worked out.

Yeah the lady that I stood beside in line was in her mid 60's I'd guess (take it easy Tomorrow, I don't take anything outside...), and she asked me, "I don't know anything about these (pointed at HDTVs), what do I need to look for?". Buying the HD player before the HDTV is alright I guess if you need a new DVD player anyway, but yeah she was just there because there were deals. She is also a Macintosh user, but was buying the Acer laptop just because it was "supposed to be a good deal" and said somebody in her family might use it, but she wasn't going to! Just shopping for deals. 'Hey this is a good buy, I'm not going to use it, but I can't pass that up!'
