To compress or not to compress

I am having difficulty it seems with compression related problems while viewing SD cable broadcasts. I do use my receiver to switch video signals and so I'm wondering if the receiver (S.Newcastle 963t) does add any compression to the signal. I have digital cable and a Zenith C34w37 HD TV (CRT).

Thanks

No, the receiver doesn't compress any video signals. A receiver that includes video processing, like upscaling or deinterlacing, will change the signal but does not apply any kind of compression - it works with what it was sent.

Agree with MDS.

What type of compression problems are you having? What is the symptom?

The problem is very low picture quality with SD signals. I posted a query in the Televisions & Displays section. See the heading "low qual. non HD pic". Seems the problem might very well be digital compression artifacts. The video looks picsilated. Loss of crisp edges and textural variations and detail.

On a different note; Am I making a mistake sending my HD digital cable through the receiver (for switching purposes) via component video and then on to the monitor via component video instead of going straight from the cable box to the monitor via HDMI?
