My current speaker setup is B&W DM602 S2 for front and 601 for surrounds. I'm looking to do a significant upgrade. At first I was just looking at replacing all speakers but realized I could save quite a bit by just making the 602s surrounds as well and just upgrading fronts and center.
However, I've heard that it's important to match speaker brand across front and surrounds. My question is, if I bought B&W 683, even though they're several generations newer, are they close enough that there wouldn't be any issues with timbre matching? And taking that a step further, if I took the savings to do a bigger upgrade and moved up to the CM series would those still work well with the older speakers as surrounds? Do you ideally need to match speakers just in the same company or to the same speaker line?
On a side note, in a 7.1 or Atmos system are the 602s better served as sides or rear versus the 601s?
