This sounds like a deal...

Newegg.com has the Onkyo TX-NR 696 that I've been looking at for $399. $180 off what I've seen usually of about $579. Just wondering if it may be an "open box" or "factory refurb" ? It's coming out of electronics express.

Any thoughts ? I've got about 7 hours to order.

Well don't see much about what the Electronics Express offer means particularly but only a 1 year warranty and returns on EE's terms whatever that is (didn't read). Is that a normal Onkyo warranty these days? I do see a new Onkyo (but a higher model, the 830) on A4L with a three year mfr's warranty so wonder if it is a refurb or similar at EE.

I see Best Buy has a similar Denon AVR S750H same price.

Amazon has the Onkyo TX-RZ820 for 449 new with 3 year warranty. It was 399 for a long time the price went up 50 bucks just recently. At that price that unit is very hard to best for what it has. Pre-amp outs all the latest and greatest formats. 130 X 2 @ 8 Ohms

That's good enough for me to consider an Onkyo if I were shopping for a receiver.

I’m thinking of picking this up for myself, the reviews are good on it. My Yamaha a1080 is going strong but this world be a nice back up unit. In a months time I blow 400 bucks on BS. I’ll pick one up fire it up make sure everything is good run it for a week or so than box it back up everyone should have a back up unit

Or find a compelling reason to have 2 systems setup at home...

TX RZ 820 looks like better. Has the pre outs just in case I'd like to add an amp at some point ?
much better! much more mucher! Has high end parts in side. That unit is the best deal on a AVR it’s a lil dated but not by much. It won’t do 4K upscale though if that matters wouldn’t to me.

Room correction too. I don't remember what Onkyo is using now but it's not Audyssey anymore. That would be the closest thing to a deal breaker for me.

I think that range of Onkyo is using a modified version of AccuEQ (which was Onkyo's in-house answer when dropping Audyssey), as seems the later AccuEQ versions have been enhanced with some of the Pioneer MCACC features (if it isn't just MCACC).

I think the tx rz730 is the latest version in that price range. Better amplification it looks like in the RZ line.
