This is driving me "crazy" - no mid bass

Try some Paradigm Titan Monitor (Front) and Mini Monitor (Surround) speakers. They will do your mid-bass correctly, and much much more too.
They are very affordable, even brand new.
But because now I know that you value good value, check for some used pairs at Audiogon, and get a Paradigm CC-190 for the center speaker. Get that center speaker of yours out of the way, and those Bose surrounds as well.
If you want audio satisfaction in your life, change these five speakers, pronto.

Now, go get them tiger. :)

Subs needs help at 80hz on up

I had a nice problem that surprized me!
During cd play back i noticed those great bass lines were too strong on one particular note,as it turned out the 80hz x/over allowed the velo too be too strong and i just turned the x/over too 75hz and the 2-8" woofers in the left spkr took over just right on replay!!

On music i just cant imagine a 5.25" pair of drivers comming close reproducing the 81hz at the intensity and realism the sub was doing and yes that hole would bother anybody!

I would switch the front with the bose/boxum up/and get some bigger drivers up front! Oh the x/over problem was on RAMBLIN ON ,LED ZEP,
Theres a huge amount of bass over 80hz!!

YOU HAVE 2 SUBS,NO HOLE THERE,ITS A CANYON!! imop

I'm back......

After following Lordoftherings 6 step program, I did notice a difference, but the problem is still very much there. After reading through the other posts in this thread, it is apparent that I am battling a hardware issue more than anything - specifically front speakers.

Just so y'all know, I ended up with the Polk Monitor 50's when I found them on Slickdeals.net for $70 a piece - shipped!! hahaha Seriously, before the 50's I had the Monitor 10's and were satisfied with them. (of course I didn't have unrealistic expectations from a bookshelf speaker) I do like the Polks because they seem to offer more treble than other speakers in their price range. (cheap) When I saw the 50's for such a "good deal", I ordered a pair thinking that they would be as good as the 10's in the treble department, and would bring an appreciable amount of bass to the table. Boy, I was dead wrong. Oh well, chalk it up to experience I guess.

The Denon I ended up with when a customer of mine upgraded to one of the new "uber' Denons and sold me the old one for -- ya'll are going to hate me for this -- $100.

I bought the HSU sub after doing some research here at Audioholics. I love that thing - other than the fact that it leaves all my other crappy speakers in the dust! hahaha

I like what TLS Guy said about front speakers, "When the OP goes and buys speakers next time, he should find speakers that sound great without a sub. All speakers should be very listenable without a sub. If a speaker screams connect a sub, pass it by. The sub should just guild the lily." That makes perfect sense. What I need you guys to do is recommend me a set of "older" front speakers that will do the job for me. I am very much on a budget and cannot afford the latest 'n greatest. Surely there is something used in the $300 +/- range (pair) that will work. They don't necessarily have to be tower speakers either. If y'all know of a set of small speakers that will work well together (and with the Denon and the HSU) I'd be up for that too. I am open to all suggestions. Thanks again for everyone's help!
That is not much for speakers even used. I have looked at eBay, and Audiogon, and see nothing that I could recommend to solve your problem.

What I find with used speakers, is that the market is saturated with the poor ones. People who get a decent set of speakers they like, hold on to them.

I guess the best example is TDL speaker designed by the late John Wright. We know he produced a lot of speakers, and they are not known for failure. However seeing one on the second hand market is a very rare sighting indeed and usually an estate sale. People won't let them out of their grip.

Other speakers that circulate are exotics, that come up when the owners over extended themselves and need cash.

6th Ave has the DefTech Studio 450's for 248/pr that has a 6.5" mid range, 10" passive woofer and can easily get down to 60Hz and blends great with sub.

You have to call them, it was an advertised price in their ad, they will price match the ad but if store isnt close by they will tack on 50-70 shipping.

Since you like Polk speakers and mid bass, I recommend the RTi8.

The 3805 will get the best out of them for you.

I have the Monitor 40's, which are the bookshelf version of your Monitor 50's, and I have the same issue. They sound dull and lifeless no matter what type of hardware I hook them up to or how I equalize them.

Hi Cheetah,

Yep, I think that must of us (well few anyway), can perfectly relate to that.
It's called: time for speakers' replacement. :)

Cheers,

Save up and take your time!

Any excuse is a great excuse for speaker shopping, but hope i wasnt way too blunt or rude about the canyon!
See whats around and research a bunch, around a amount you can save to,i ended up with infinity beta 50s, 2-8" woofers 4.5" midrange,1" tweetie in each cabinet.
They have excelent bass and the Nad makes those things play up to ther mettle worth!
I found a cherry pair for 573.00 but i had saved a while, other members have spkrs i would give a lifesaving course to a polar bear for!
No *^%#
