Can any one tell me what volume levels are used at a big time movie theatre? My wife says I play movies back too loud.

I would like to know that too, mine complains that it hurts her ears, i just think she is picky, i like to listen to my movies loud, so i have to wait till she not around, which is not often, so i do not get a chance to watch much movies they way I like to.

That will depend upon the theater. I have been to some that were just too loud. I am sure there was much clipping present.

THX certified theaters will typically calibrate for 110-115db reference peak.

How loud are you listening to movies? As it's been said I've been in theaters that were way too loud and I've been in a couple that weren't loud enough. Most of them seem to be decent though. But again what are you listening at?

I think this could be the best belated Valentines gift ever. Well for your spouse anyway. I just got lucky because my girlfriend loves it when I crank up the volume.

I suggest you turn it down some. Women get less hearing loss with age usually. Besides if it hurts it could actually damage her hearing. And you don't want to have to tell her twice.:p But seriously a happy wife is better than louder music.:D

The problem is that people have huge setups in such small rooms..

Try lowering your sub if you have one, and backing down the treble some. Sometimes its just the peak freq that bother people, either too much highs or ovelry powering bass..either way shes gonna get her way lol

105dB peak on the main channels, 115dB peak on the LFE channel, and probably higher if all channels are at peak. But the average level will likely be around 75dB.

Seriously, I have no life.
Women have different sensitivity to sound when compared to men. Always have, always will. You all know how you can be doing something and there should be no way a woman could hear when A) you do something wrong, B) something bad happens, even if it's not your fault, C) you say something she wouldn't like or D) you have a thought that she wouldn't like and she's right there to give you grief, right?

They know, man! They know!

One way is to buy a digital SPL meter from Radio Shack and take it to a move and show her:D
Don't forget, theaters are acoustically treated, many of them anyhow, so the highs might not be so loud? And, the home movie may not have re-eq engaged?

I was going to guess between 75-80dB but I wasn't quite sure. I'm getting pretty good at guessing thanks to work and people that don't know how to use a sound board just cranking the **** out of it. :(
