I finally went and saw it too. Had a couple of movie ticket Christmas presents. I liked it well enough. Way better than the last Jedi.

I probably won't see it for a few months.

But I judge each Star Wars movie with all the movies out there, not with the previous Star Wars movies, which mostly suck. :D

The question is, what makes a Star Wars movie "great"?

1. Does it have great Character Development? Do we bond with these characters or want them all to die in the movie? :D

2. Does it have a great Plot? Or more plot holes and "fillers" just to drag the movie out?

I was like 'Meh', on Rise of Skywalker, they played it safe, terrible character development with minimal chemistry between cast.

I was giving my buddy my feedback on the movie after we both saw it, he sent me the review and was almost verbatim my thoughts;

THIS IS A SPOILER REVIEW: DON'T READ UNTIL AFTER YOU SEE THE MOVIE o_O

My summary of your two questions, spoiler free:

1. Character Development in minimal, did not think the main cast had chemistry

2. Plot is SAFE. It has many holes
  1. Significant characters in the last film have diminished or no role in this film. - not necessarily a bad thing!
  2. Disney throws in some last PC things at the end of the film, you will understand when you see it
  3. Cheap pop Cameo's, while cheap, I still enjoyed them
I gave it about a C/C-, so given we always tend to disagree on movies, you may like it ;) I was entertained, but not enough to see it a second time.

Side note: The Last Star Wars Film (The Last Jedi) for me ranks as my least favorite of all the Star Wars Movies ever made. This bumps Jar Jar Binks up one spot. I also liked the Solo Movie, was't great, but probably one spot behind Rise of Skywalker.

Lack of the 2 salient ingredients of a great movie = mediocrity at best. :D

I just read more (old) bad news regarding SW - the creators of GOT are no longer doing the next SW trilogy.

Oh well, more mediocrity will probably continue and Disney will continue to make a few more billions.

Some have put forth that the loss of the GOT people is actually a good thing considering how poorly that series resolved. I had heard much discussion that indicated they didn't really have a plan for wrapping it all up. Hell, I lost interest when the Dragon became undead (or whatever).

The “worst” GOT episode is still 100 times better than any of these new SW movies. Haha. :D

I encourage everyone to completely dismiss the criticisms of this movie, particularly the agenda-laden youtube warriors out there who don't approach their reviews with any level of integrity. Their reviews are baked in as negative no matter what.

****Spoiler alert****

Abrams had to do two things. First, he had to basically tell Rian Johnson to **** off, and undo the entire disaster of The Last Jedi. Johnson and Kennedy had their clear agendas. Johnson is a self-loathing anti-capitalist who built a 45-minute scene to rant about his hate for capitalism, while giving us a lecture about animal cruelty and slavery. Then Kennedy had to castrate Star Wars entirely and turn the rebellion into council only comprised of women and purple-haired transsexuals.

Everything that Abrams set up - Rey's history, the Finn break from the First Order, the Jedi texts, and the beautiful ending scene when Rey finally delivers Anakin's lightsaber to Luke - was literally tossed away by Johnson as meaningless. He turned Luke into the same beta male that Johnson is, suckling from the milk teets of sea cow dinosaurs, and went about his progressive temper tantrum about his own sad life. The most interesting new character Abrams created, Finn, was given nothing to do the entire movie but find an Asian girlfriend and head to a casino. Po was turned into a "flyboy" not worthy of knowing what the smart women leaders planned to do, which was apparently to think of ramming ships at light speed into enemy ships! Who knew we could have ended this entire war 8 episodes ago with that tactic? Rose was introduced to make sure we had our token Asian and deliver the most awful line ever iterated in Star Wars, "It's not about destroying was we hate, it's about protecting what we love?" Yeah, that Hallmark nonsense will work, sure.

The Last Jedi was garbage. To properly fix it, the follow-up had to be fast and furious, which it was. I wish he would have added the necessary half hour to slow it down, but I think a second viewing will do just that. (I'm going to wait until the disc release and see it in my home theater.)

Abrams dealt with Johnson's sophomoric drivel, item by item, and put this amateur in his place. The lightsaber flip now basically never happened after Luke caught it for Rey and told her that a jedi always respects his weapon. Rose was cast aside as nothing but a bit extra in the background. Rey now really does have a background of significance. Luke found his balls again and raised his ship to Yoda's theme. Finn became central to the story again, and Po reclaimed his importance as the new Hans.

In other words, Rian, you need to go sit at the kid's table where you belong.

The internet dorks are piling on this movie without doing the research. Others are showing that, yes, Palpatine could still be alive as he pointed out in 3. Skywalker was not Anakin's mothers name, so perhaps it's a jedi name. The closest thing to parents Rey ever knew were Luke and Leia, and she is a jedi, so taking that name was perfectly logical and warranted.

Plus, I adhere to theory that she's pregnant and buried the the two light sabers to train her twin sons. In the final Romeo and Juliet scene between her and Kylo, he saw the light and became Ben, who is half Skywalker himself. She had already told him she would have taken Ben's hand, but not Kylo's. He finally gave his life to her by placing his hand on her womb. He died by giving her his life through the Force, as well as the lives of their unborn children within her.

Abrams paid homage to Lucas' favorite image of his creation, of Luke staring off into the horizon on Tatooine and watching the rise of the two suns. Rey chose to go there to raise two sons. "The Rise of Skywalker." Lucas loves poetic themes like that.

It's not perfect, but neither were 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. Lots of questions about all of them. Then, 8 tried to turn Star Wars into a Bravo-channel reality show.

You can make the case that Abrams produced the most well-considered and logical chapter of them all in the end, especially considering the disaster he was handed by the eunuch before him.

You and I seem to share the same opinion of TLJ... lol.

I would add also, that JJ put Rey through a little bit of adversity and she *gasp* even lost a fight!

Actual character development?! The hell you say! :p

Abrams properly demonstrated that Kylo was infinitely more trained than Rey and could destroy her easily in a light saber fight if he wanted to. He didn't want to. She was effectively the only person he truly cared about other than his parents, and that bridge was burned.

Meanwhile, Johnson showed Rey in the red room as a seasoned and trained fighter that could take down Snoke's special warriors with ease. In fact, go watch that fight scene again and watch the red warriors twist around and spin with nobody around them. It's so stupid.

Rian Johnson, in the meantime, did do some good things between Rey and Kylo, but he seemed more interested in creating sexual tension. As she blushed when Kylo was shirtless. LOL, "never mind you're slaughtering people, you are so hot!" Good thing noboddy told Holdo that Rey liked a boy. LOL

“You can make the case that Abrams produced the most well-considered and logical chapter of them all in the end, especially considering the disaster he was handed by the eunuch before him”
  • Agree that that he had his work cut out for him, and while it may be the most well-constructed logical chapter given the poor source material, in the end, it didn’t make for a really good movie or ending for me.
“I encourage everyone to completely dismiss the criticisms of this movie, particularly the agenda-laden YouTube warriors out there who don't approach their reviews with any level of integrity. Their reviews are baked in as negative no matter what.”
  • That’s why I made it a point not to read any reviews nor let anyone discuss them with me before I saw the movie. My opinions were based on my own views which were matched by the Nerdist review. The only previews I saw were 1) At Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, 2.) At the movie Theater and 3) at the end of the Mandalorian.
  • I 100% agree with you that Rian Johnson screwed the pooch on the last film for exactly the same reasons you stated in your comments. JJ had his work cut out for him, and while he fixed a lot of things, there were just to many unfinished plot points and other items in the film that made it less enjoyable for me

To address your points, (Spoilers Ahead) ß--------------------
  • Finn was put back in the story, but they left so much unresolved with his character other than saying multiple time throughout the film, “I need to talk to Ray”….he never did, you are left with the impression that he might be strong with the force, but it was very much unfinished plot points
  • Po is still all over the place and they threw in “Falicity with Armor” into the plot which was a total waste of time in my opinion, and there was no chemistry between her and Po.
  • There wasn’t enough time or content to really turn Po into the new Han and it fell kind of flat in my eyes.
  • I still think Kylo came across as a little pre-teen baby in this film. He goes from being able to stop a laser beam in mid-air, to not being able to defend himself without his light saber at the Emperor’s hideout.
  • He only won one fight against ray, I don’t think they really demonstrated his superiority with the force
  • If Leia had that power she used in this film, why didn’t she use it earlier: at least no LEIA POPPINS!
  • I felt they ruined “The Force,” by including "over the top" abilities to advance plot points. This mistake started in the Last Jedi, but was taken to a whole new level in the last film.
  • To your comment about new twins: "When they hell did they have time to make a baby” lol, but since the force now lets you teleport to anyone at any time, I guess she should have done a “Force Booty Call.”
  • Kylo had enough hate to kill his father, but one intergalactic phone call from Leia and he suddenly reverted back to Ben?
Those are just some of the things that made the movie less enjoyable for me, and it may be nit picking. I remember when I was 6 seeing episode IV in the theater over 20 times. As a six year-old I didn’t see these movies through such pessimistic eyes. It’s easy to be hyper critical on these movies, but the bottom line for me is that there is not enough time or material to get me invested in these characters like the first three films. It’s a lot harder to forgive the other mistakes being made. You make a valid point that the other movies had their issues too, but the bottom line is that what the first three movies did very well, was to get you invested in the characters who had great chemistry, I didn't see that in any of these three films, so I am probably less forgiving.

JJ Abrahams did ad admirable job trying to fix the wrongs of the last film, but I think that task was just to overwhelming for anyone to make a solid movie out of.

Abrams wanted to make two movies. Disney said no. Then he made a movie that was 3:15 long apparently. Disney cut it to 2:22.

Important point to make, being what this site is all about.

Love it or hate it, this has the potential to be the best audio/video reference movie ever made. It's one scene after another that it ideal for home theater demo material.

Let's hope they get the lighting and sound perfect on this one, and that the Atmos guy isn't going through the motions.

Saw it on Christmas day in IMAX. Liked it well enough. It is not a classic, it did sort of what it was supposed to do in wrapping things up, but much of it felt rushed and wasn't really satisfying. even with another hour, not sure it would really have been better. IMO, Mandalorian is better.

It seems like all the Disney movies I've seen have mediocre or pathetic Atmos sound. So hopefully this movie will be different.

I'm optimistic because it certainly looked and sounded great in the theater. Better than the other two.

But it's all in the transfer.
