The Old Guard - Charlize Theron movie

Yeah, I thought it was entertaining. Like most of these types of movies it wasn't flawless. I recently watched MI Fallout, you get what you expect. But I will say Tom Cruise is getting a little old for the roll. His physical movement looks more like his real age now. So his actions scenes are a little off. Which Bond movie was it that Connery played played the old spy? IMO, future MI's need to take that into consideration. Anyway, I digress...

I've been watching all kinds of stuff, probably like a lot of us who are home a lot now. I also watched Resident Evil. While mildly entertaining, I'm not sure how they like 7 of them? Maybe I'll watch the second one to see if it gets better. I further digress...

For the type of movie Old Guard was it was as expected and I liked it. I watched it on Netflix. It seems like a movie that went straight to Netflix because of the current pandemic, as opposed to a straight to dvd/netflix kind of movie, and would have done satisfactory at the movie theater. If they made a follow up I would watch it on Netflix.
Still....it's impressive him doing his own stunts, especially at his age....and breaking his ankle on one of them in Fallout.

Not great too much talking and not enough action. I guess the sequel will be better since this was just a setup for the second one. C- and that’s being kind and not fun and pretty silly. :p

Another thing I don't appreciate about it is it feels agenda driven. There are things forced into it for the sake of identity politics that make no sense in the story. I'm not against diversity, but jamming it into movies just to have it in there doesn't work for me.

I feel like that is what is filling the stream waves right now. Tons of show with agenda's. It's becoming too obvious when watching a show. Can really turn off a potential viewer. HBO seems to be doing that more and more right now. If you watched the show Watchmen, which i did enjoy. Had it's issues, but was entertained overall. Right now it's Perry Mason. Great show, but definitely has another agenda driven undertone.

Just my thoughts. Maybe some won't agree, but those are just a couple of my observations as of late.

I just think of it as a shift in direction, as identity agendas have always been with us and the old ones weren't "better".....

It's not the direction that bothers me. It's the ham fisted way it's shoved in there. The political message takes the forefront and making sure it's a good movie becomes secondary. In a couple of spots I think it feels so forced and out of place it jars me right out of the scene and loses emotional impact.

Example in this one?

Just captured by dangerous threatening people, beat up and tied up in the back of a truck, might have to fight their way out, a tense and dangerous situation for sure. Then out of nowhere start waxing poetic about the depth of your incredible love for each other to your captors right before making out heavily with each other.

Wait? What's going on here now? Are they in danger? That was just jammed in there to virtue signal. What did it have to do with the plot, mood and current situation they were in? Took me right out of the scene.

That's not where I stopped it tho. I kept going until what's her name broke in to rescue her new friends and immediately intentionally shot herself in the foot to prove who she was... that was the straw for me. That was just dumb and unnecessary. I shut it off right there.

I just look at that as just poor writing/plot, and there's plenty of that in many action flicks. I thought the make out scene was kinda funny for the look on the bad guys' faces....certainly something you'd never see in movies of the past largely, tho. The whole immortal premise is kinda silly to begin with....

Well that's kinda my point. The message becomes more important so the writing/plot suffer for it. It's like:

Screenwriter guy: "This is gonna be a great scene!"
Producer: "Yup. You should have them make out tho."
SG: "Wait, what? Why? That doesn't even make sense with this scene..."
P: "You know you're a misogynist, homophobic nazi for even asking that question, right?"
SG: "O..o..okay..."

I've been watching too many "Pitch Meetings" on YouTube... lol. :p

Hmmm...what's a pitch meeting? Don't know that this approach is any worse than some of the old macho male shite we've been inundated with forever.....

ps just peeked at the youtube pitch meeting channel offerings.....what's with the eyes?

If you start watching them you might get sucked into binging about 50 of them. His name is Ryan George and he has a bunch of stuff on his own channel too. He's one of my favorite sketch guys on YouTube right now.

I don't know if those are his natural eyes or if he wears contacts. It is striking at first, but I'm used to him now.

It's ok, not excellent, not terrible. Charlize Theron kicks ass. The rest of the actors are pretty much forgettable.
[We talked about it here, maybe our esteemed mods @Steve81 would pretty please join these two threads?]

Old Guard (2020) or the Old Ways (2023) with Nic Cage?
