The Mighty Onkyo NR906 Has Fallen?!?!

So we were using our setup today for a while (watching TV, high volume Borderlands session, very low volume Scrubs watching while eating dinner) and it went into circuit protect mode! First time in over 2 years of owning it!

I'm worried it won't come back and I'd have to pay to have it repaired. That said, I need suggestions for a new AVR. I need to power the speakers shown in my sig, I need at least 4 HDMI in, and I need 2 HDMI out. I also need the ability to zone 2 the stereo speakers in the bedroom.

This receiver has never given us problems, so I hope it can come back from this. I unplugged it and set it on an open table. Will plug it back in and try to turn it on with nothing connected in an hour as per Onkyo manual. Ah this sucks... :(

Check for loose connections and shorted speaker wires.

Pulled it out, unplugged, let it sit for an hour. Plugged it in, turned it on, no good. Just turns right back off.

I'm thinking of the Yamaha RX-A800 or A1000 to replace it.

You seem pretty seriously into this. Seriously think about a prepro and external amps, and leave receivers behind you. You won't regret it.

I would TLS, but no space for that right now. Besides, I can't find a pre-pro that does what I want, so I'd wind up with an AVR as the processor anyway. I found the amp (UPA-7), but no the processor.

Right now it looks like the RX-A2000 is my choice. The woman is mad that this thing is dead. :(

If I were in the market the RX-A2000 would be my choice.

So she's so mad that you need to buy another reciever?:p

Could be worse.

Even M Code has said one of the best values right now is the Denon 4310. Superceded by the 4311 now. 4310 had for roughly 1k, and the 4311 about 50% more if you ask the right people.

4310 is built in Japan.

If your budget is bigger, I'm sure there's better.

She's mad that such an expensive piece died in 2 years when we haven't cranked it and have babied it. It was even extremely clean when I pulled it out of the cabinet, no dust anywhere except under it.

I don't think the Denon had the ability to output a second zone over HDMI. That's what's drawing me to the Yammy A2000 right now.

You live in New Jersey?

Denon has their OEM Factory Repair Center in NJ.

I wish there were a Denon Repair Center in Oklahoma -- I mean Krypton.:D

I guess there is not a Onkyo Repair Center in NJ?

Is there a Yamaha Repair Center in NJ?

I hate having to SEND these big heavy electronics back for repairs.

Definitely the way to go if you can swing it.

Yeah, I got in touch with Onkyo. Could be anything from a blown fuse to a blown power supply. The repair center isn't open today, so I'll have to wait till Monday to make any progress on this.

The Denons 3311 and up have dual HDMI outs just like the Yammie.

No no no my friend, the Denons do not do HDMI out to the second zone. They do the same zone for both HDMIs, like for switching between a plasma and a projector in one zone. The Yammys, if the specs are to be believed, should output two different sources to each HDMI out. That's a feature I've been waiting for for over 2 years.

Have you looked at the Marantz AV7005 (MSRP $1,499.99) or the Onkyo PR-SC5508 (MSRP $2,199.00)? Finally some pre-pros that can compete with current receivers at a more reasonable price point (both available in between $1,000 and $2,000).

I don't see how it would be worth it for my listening environment. I don't see what spending at least 3x the amount of money between the pre-pro + amp will get me over just getting the Denon 3311 (I get a nice discount on it).

Hey hey hey, it was their specs that said HDMI for Zone B output when it's NOT! Zone B means I can use Zone A and B at the same time. Their manual clearly contradicts that statement in their product specs.:p:D
