The Great Whisky Giveaway!

Dear all,

It so happens that I've a spare bottle of 12 year old Glen Ord Single Malt Scotch whisky (currently my favourite) and I thought it'd be a nice gesture on my part to give something back to the site from which I've learned so much. :)

The competition is open to all members and I am prepared to post to anywhere in the world. To win, you must correctly answer, or failing that come the closest to correctly answering the following question:

What is the length in meters of the largest span of any single or multi-span bridge that I have worked on?

The only hint I shall give is that the bridge in question would be classed as a long-span bridge. The winner will be announced on Tuesday 17th January.

Good luck to all who enter. :)

At first I was thinking about the "Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge" in Japan, but I figured they wouldn't allow you over there...................:p

I'll shoot for 650 meters for a bridge that has not been completed, Thames Gateway Bridge.

650 meters

I work on any and all types of bridges from very small spans to very large, though the latter are by their nature rare.

As for the type, 'long-span' is your clue.

You each have one guess, but I've no objection to you editing a submitted post's value if for any reason you decide you wish to amend your guess.

I can confirm that the bridge in question has not been completed. But then, it's not been started either, and may well never be...

It's The New Mersey Crossing.

Ditton Roundabout to Mersey Gateway South Junction is 4.2 km, though some of this is probably not elevated.

Like I said, I'll p.m. you my address.

Umm... you may want to be careful as if you send it to the USA, you have to make sure it's to someone over 21. If you senit it to sheep, that's quite illegal.

Okay...okay. I don't know what you do for a living, but aren't all Scots engineers? "Beam me up, Irish."...just doesn't sound right.

Nevertheless, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you DON'T work on typical bridges. I'm thinking outside the box. (Dangerous, I know.) I'm thinking dental bridges! Heh heh. Yeah, that's it. So my guess is 6 cm.

Digby Suspension Bridge ? if not I'll guess 680 meters, and sheep, you're 18, you better give that bottle to me for safe keeping till you're 19. Of course by that time I assume the liquor will have dried up, but on your 19th I'll send you the empty bottle ;). I hope it's not 1688M because that was my first guess.

Being 18, and looking 18 are totally different things ;)

Read post number six. The bridge has not been built, so guessing particular bridges is pointless.

I figure I'll not be extradited. Besides, if Sheep/Jaxvon etc happen to win, I'm sure they'll simply pass it on to someone over the legal drinking age in a responsible manner. ;) ;) ;)

Assessment work mostly, but I've worked on designs as well. Masonry arches, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel, steel-composite, cable-stayed and suspension bridges; all fall under my hand! (that's fall, not fall-down :D)

It's not a trick question. I am a Bridge Engineer in the normal sense of the word, not a dental surgeon (shakes his head). :D Besides, who has a mouth large enough that would require a 6cm bridge?!!
