Don't you find it funny scientific knowledge, data, measurement instruments get us to the moon and back years ago yet people could not accept specs that can be displayed on accurate measurement instruments? Engineers who design, build, test and measure amps must be laughing eveyday at work.

Seriously when I spent big (by my standard) money on my Bryston, Denon universal, Chesky SACDs, I expected to get audible improvements but now I would concentrate on identifying high quality recordings (CD, SACD or BR regardless) by reading a lot of reviews and focus on saving up for speaker upgrade because I now know for sure that's the way to get the best sound quality improvements for the money. I have long given up on McIntosh but I still love their look.
Can't agree more. These days I am all about the quality of the recordings (classical/jazz/etc) and finding new music - I am done spending on gear.
Can't afford spending again and again on gear.
In the end good music/recordings are supposed to be the end game for hifi.
Also - once you got a good pair of speakers you need to keep in mind that real progress in the driver technology happens maybe once in 20 years so I am thinking run your gear into the ground and replace it rather than "upgrade" it.
But this depends in the end how much money you have - you could play upgradatis every other day should you be a millionaire.

We did??? I thought it was a staged event on a movie stage someplace;):D Some people accept that bs without batting an eye.:D Why would audio be different?

Glad to see somebody recognizing the value of good recordings.

However, I would be careful about using the advancement of of driver tech happening only every 20 years. I've been in this hobby for 30 years and from my perspective advancement is small but constant. You're correct that big leaps are rare, but I see regular, small improvements all the time. One of the big pressures on speaker manufacturers to evolve is by way of customization of drivers to fit their blueprint. Speaker manufacturers can order modifications to drivers from OEM's. A second factor is that via the DIY gang, crossovers are expected to be of higher quality. Polk Audio has taken a beating from their own fan base for not making the LSi crossovers equal to the rest of the speaker parts. Supposedly, the new LSi series crossover is vastly improved.

I would suggest to everyone to contact fellow audio enthusiasts in their own area and arrange for a gathering. It's the best way to hear all the differences in audio reproduction, including amplification.

I know there's a story about a guy working at Adyton in Norway doing the fine tuning of amplifiers by ear, because the measuring instuments was not fine tuned enough to get it 100% right....
My question in this case would be just what set of ears is he tuning? His, of course! My ears are most assuredly "tuned differently" than his...

How do you know this that your ears are tuned differently....?

So do you have ears good enough to tune equipment ... only by using your ears?
I really do believe that a good ear may comprehend differences that we are not able to measure consistently, the ear is incredibly sensitive...

Absolutely correct Haraldo.
Those same "good ears" have been "comprehending" things like ghosts and other apparitions, for thousands of years. Yet "we" are still not able to measure ghosts/apparitions consistently, are we?
Indeed, the "ear" is incredibly sensitive. More so than the scientific equipment trying to detect those ghosts that many "hear" with those "ears".
