After a second look at the cylinders, her reaction was: "Ooh, that's big".
One of the few times I've not liked hearing those words.
On order SB-12plus.
Kitty will just need to continue destroying the furniture.

Kitties get very well behaved around the cylinders after a quick demo of WOTW Ch. 5 @ -10. It's something they remember during normal listening and quiet times. They're never sure when it will wake up. Just like a hibernating bear.

I think you've managed to justify a shaker sub under the couch.:D
In my mind anyway.

Fellow cat lover too. IMO, cats are the coolest animals around and being that they get bored easily they will leave the subwoofer alone soon enough. Of course if it's located somewhere they find appealing there is a very high probability that they will adopt it as a sleeping place.
That would suggest that you need a different sub or there something wrong with your cat. Sell the cat and get another sub.

Well the sub hasn't even arrived yet, probably not till next week.:( But I gotta say I'm already impressed.
If the quality of their product is anything close to their customer service my HT is in for a treat.
I Emailed SVS concerning the possible advantage of splitting the single output of my Yamaha into the R/L inputs of the sub.
Got a reply within 10 minutes.
I've Emailed other companies; Yamaha, Onkyo, Sony, etc...and felt blessed if I got a response within 24 hours.

BTW, the answer was no advantage what so ever.

A little late to the party but I figured I'd add my two cents anyway.

I have 3 cats and they've never taken an interest in scratching the numerous cylinder subs I've had around, especially after the first time they were on. You have to remember that directly behind the fabric is the cylinder wall and the fabric is not very thick (closest example I can think of would be fabric car seats) so the cats really can't dig their claws into it.

But I realize that different cats like scratching different things so I'm not going to guarantee your cats won't like it; but even if they do scratch the sub the fabric is very durable and can take a lot of abuse. There are also a lot of ways to prevent cats from scratching things you don't want them to: you can spray them with a water gun when they do it, you can put double sided tape on the sub until they stop scratching, you can spray it with cat repellant, etc.

Having said all that, you can always go with one of our box subs and never worry about it.

The true reason I shyed away from the larger subs was because they were too large for my girlfiends tastes. Can't blame her I guess. She's let me take quite a few liberties with our living room / Ht room. But the cat was a concern. I didn't want to learn the hard way. The SB12 also gives me more flexibilty of placement. During Xmas the sub gets displaced to the opposite side of the room by the tree. That arrangement wouldn't work with the cylinders or big box subs.

No doubt there will be some degree of "what if.." but that's probably true with just about anything.

Well the SB-12 arrived last night. I haven't had a chance to run any testing yet, probably this weekend.

I spent most of the night watching my glorious Packers find yet another way to lose. On a side note; ESPNHD is a pretty awesome way to watch a football game.

I did have the time listen to portions of Pink Floyd's Pulse DVD. One thing that doomed my old sub's existence in my my mind was it's performance during "Sorrow".
The SVS sounded great to say the least.

The first conclusion I've come to is the SVS's temporary Xmas placement under the glass topped table ain't gonna work. Enough said?

More soon.

Congratulations on the new Sub.

All I can say is, Calibrate your system, put in "War of the Worlds" scene 5. Turn volume up to reference levels, and hold on for your life. LMAO  :D :D

calibrate ??

I am to receive my new SVS sub next week. Do I need to have it professionally or will my auto set up on my Yamaha receiver ( RXV-2500) do a good enough job??

Well. Chloe seems to have made friends with the SB-12.
I'm still in the process of tweaking.
While the performance is light years ahead of my cheapo Onkyo sub, placement is far more critical. I've placed it in several locations in the room and gone back to close to it's original spot.

Actually not as pictured but closer to the corner.

As far back to the corner as I can get it.

Stupid Christmas tree.

You are just too kind to that cat...they should be wary of a sub. Crank it up for a couple of hours, then look for the cat's reaction (you've probably already done it)

Enjoy your toy.

Tazmoj, the 2500 is a great receiver (I have one) but the automatic stuff does not work very well -- you need to go through the speaker setup stuff manually, like setting all your speakers to Small, LFE out to sub only, sub crossover (in the 2500) to 80Hz.

The instructions you receive with your SVS sub will suggest room placements and cover basic setup, but it is up to you to locate and setup the sub to your liking. It's not hard, it's fun!

Although you can do it by ear with CDs and DVDs you have, the next step in accuracy is to buy a meter and a test disc -- the SVS manual has instructions on how to do this if you want to.

That cat needs a little demo of "War of the Worlds" scene 5. :D :D :D

And if you haven't demo'd it yourself, you need to.

I finally took the time to measure and calibrate the new SB12.
My room fared much better than I thought it would. My measurements showed a slight peak (+3db) at 30hz which I'm attributing more to the harmonics of room vibration than the 30hz signal alone, and a 7db peak at 55hz which the PEQ seems to have flattened out quite well.
So far I've left the room compensation off as it seems to limit the lower frequencies too much.
We watched Pirates of the Carib 2 the other night and had the house shaking!
This was popular with every one except the lone 12 year old who was trying to talk on the phone in the basement. Silly boy.
This thing is an absolute monster for it's size.

Nomo,

Cool cat. We have two. Fortunately they are indoor cats and both were declawed early in life (front paws only). Aren't you concerned about the front grill?

So how do you like the sealed plus sub? I'm in awe on the size of the surrounds on my Plus/2. How is the Xmax - do you get a lot of movement with the driver being sealed? Also, how large is your room? Does it fill the room?

She's never messed with the grills on the floor standing fronts, so I'm not concerned about ant damage the the sub. In reality, I probably could have safely gone with a tower... where the cat's concerned anyway. When I compared the size of the towers to a smaller version of the water heater, the warning light went on with the GF:eek: .

I don't have much experience with a quality sub, so I really don't have a good comparision for the driver movement.

The room is 16 x 19, pretty big, but the SB12 seems well up to the task of filling the room, but I'm not a big bass head.
I generally run the Xover at 90hz but at times when I feel the need for more bass I'll drop it down to 60hz. The 12" drivers on the old Technics go down pretty easily to 45hz and give a little extra thump when needed.

The SVS drops to -3db at around 21hz in my room. Certainly not extreme low extension but I'm not sure how much material is out there below 20 anyway.
