Hello everyone. I am upgrading and wondering about center channel. I have currently, a Klipsch rp-500C Center channel. I am in process of replacing Klipsch L and R 500s with Wharfedale super dentons. Should I replace center with SVS ultra evolution? Is it worth it and will I notice difference. I am moving to super dentons due to brightness and harshness of Klipsch. Not a pro here, just an old man who listens to classical, religious liturgical, 70’s jazz and some rock like the Eagles and America. Any help I am grateful for.

You are upgrading your speakers. I would do without a center an see how you get on. A miss matched center is worse than not having one. You really need an MTM center or a KEF center with a coaxial driver. KEF might actually be you best option for a center.

I can't speak as to whether the SVS Ultra Evo Center will be a good match with your newer Speakers, but it will be a step above the Klipsch.

The Klipsch will sound like what you had before... usually bright. Because it is an MTM, it will have some other issues as you move off axis (left or right from center).

The SVS Ultra Evo Center is a W/TM/W where the Tweeter and Mid are vertically aligned. This negates some of the more common off-axis concerns. It will be a better Center than the Klipsch in that area.

In support of TLS' comment, the center should only really be a point of interest if you are listening to programming that calls for a discrete Center Channel (watching a movie on your TV, or listening to a specific 5.1 audio recording). Do you need the Center for Stereo listening? ;) Or are you upmixing your stereo listening to Multi-channel?

As for how it will sound in your room, I cannot comment. That will be up to you and your ears.

I agree with that. If he is listening to music and mainly 2 channel he should forget the center. I assumed he had no surrounds, but may be I'm wrong about that.

I have a two channel set up in our family room, and you would not know there was no center, if you had a blindfold on. Dialog is just as clear as my systems that do have centers, and it locks to the center over a very wide listening area. I have actually been convinced that the need for centers is lousy speakers and as you know there are far more poor speakers than good ones.

A good center speaker is a really tough design challenge and by far the toughest speaker to design, I can tell you that. I have a feeling a lot of systems would actually be improved by getting rid of the center.
