How good is this sub compared to the powered one? What's a cheap but effective amplifier would do the job powering it? Would the Pioneer 1016 power this sub (I have no clue about passive subs, sorry)? Also, should I expect this sub to destroy my Velo DPS-12?
Thx.

1: I can safely say this will destroy the DPS-12.

2: No, the 1016 will NOT power this sub. Buy a Behringer A500. That should suffice.

3: I've heard the passive units are supposedly better, due to the extra volume, and airflow because of the lack of a plate amp inside them. However, take this with a grain of salt.

Not only will you need a separate amp, but some type of equilization. Add a Berhinger Feedback Destroyer for $99 to that A500 amp, and you'll have a heck of a sub. The BFD alone will do wonders for flexibility in bass output, but adding a quality dedicated rack amp should be heads and tails better than a plate amp.

Will the A500 drive a 4 Ohm load bridged? If not, that would leave him with just 230 watts.

All this EQ and Poweramp sounds very complicated. :(

In that case, I think you'd better stick with a powered sub from SVS.:D

Apparently not.
But 8 ohms, bridged will do over 300 watts.

Sure thing, SVS subs just tend to fly over to Canada at good deals. :(

I'd love to get a powered 20-39 or 25-31. But getting it shipped to Canada is retardedly expensive.

Can you guys recommend some other affordable power amps that will do the job? I'm not looking for serious power. I live in an apartment.

What I really love about my Velodyne DPS12 is that when I'm done using it, it automatically shuts off after 15min. Can passive subs do that?

Passive subs are always shut off. :D

There may be a feature on the amp such as a sleep timer, but I doubt it(wouldn't want it shutting off during a movie).

So basically, I have to manually shut off the poweramp everytime. Ugh! Well, I do have a harmony 880

Mmmm, I just bought a SVS passive sub model 25-31 off a gentleman in Brampton, coincidense?
It's running off an Adcom 5300 amp @125watts right now and sounds good. But with some 300 watt + power I wonder how much better it could be. Any recomendations for something cost effective (under $300 CDN) and available in Southern Ontario? SVS recomends a Samson SX1800 but I was quoted $649CDN!!! from local supplier.
Input appreciated.

.....it shouldn't be that complicated using the sub-out of a receiver to the sub's amp, be the amp strapped or no....I suggest checking out an inexpensive 2-channel bridgable amp from Crown.....

Ah, looks like you snagged it. I was going to buy it but had to put it off to see what this fall's university courses + books was going to run me.

Understandable, but with SVS heading north you will have your choice of any of their subs now:D
