Surround Sound on Tevion HTS

I recently bought a Tevion Home Theatre System (TCHTS2100) for cheap. It's a combined DVD player/Receiver with 5.1 surround sound capabilities. It has DTS surround output, 5.1 channel output and coaxial & optical outputs. However my TV has no coaxial or optical inputs. And I don't have an amplifier. I just have the combined DVD player/Receiver connected up via scart to the TV & the 5 speakers & subwoofer are connected to the receiver via speaker wires. Works great.

However I assumed you need to have a coaxial or optical cable to hook up to the amp or TV input also to get DTS? Seems strange if so because I have no cables going to an amp or TV except the scart and I seem to be able to get 5.1 surround sound (6 channel DTS).

So how the heck am I getting DTS surround without using an optical or coax cable? Also thet surround sound I'm getting digital or analog? Sounds great to my ears.

Thanks

You won't!

We don't have SCART, in the US, never had and never will. It is a piece of EEC junk, largely French. It is the lowest of the lowest grade analog and video connection.

You bought a unit you should not have. Even if your TV had an optical out, TVs down mix surround to 2 channel.

You need to get a decent receiver with HDMI connectivity.

Buying junk is the most expensive purchase you ever make.

Then how come 6 channel DTS surround sound is coming out of the 5 speakers + sub woofer? On the screen it shows up as 6 channel DTS.

Junk? It cost me €20 and sounds great. OK it's not HDMI or anything but I'm happy.

Thanks

You are not getting DTS surround and can't though a SCART cable. SCART is all analog and can not pass HD video or multichannel surround. Here are the SCART standards, which show its severe limitations.

What you are getting is matrixed, or "phony" six channel sound derived from a two channel audio stream. You unit will be basically fraudulent.

Now honestly, what else did you expect for 20 Euro?

It seems to work for me even without the scart cable. So even if I plug in a bog standard RCA video cable I still get DTS (or supposed DTS).

But it does seemed a bit "matrixed" across the front speakers perhaps. What is the cheapest solution to get true DTS?

Is it true DTS if I do get different "channels" out of the 5 speakers (like voice only in the center speaker)?

Also in the DVD player menu I can choose both PCM & raw and these both seem to work fine. By the way the sound I've got is not Prologic though there's an option for that too.

Thanks again

You can not pass DTS down an analog RCA cable. So you are listening to some type of matrix. I can not find data on your unit.

You can pass lossy DTS 5.1 and or lossy Dolby digital 5.1 down both toslink optical and RCA 75 ohm digital.

You can only pass Dolby true HD and DTS Mater HD via HDMI.

If your unit has certified DTS 5.1 codecs Dolby digital 5.1 codecs, then you can pass those true multi channel audio streams via optical or 75 ohm RCA from a satellite box cable box, an over the air digital TV tuner or DVD player. You can send it as either PCM or bitstream what ever your unit will accept.

You can not send this stream from most TVs

You set the latter up in the on screen menu of the sending device.

If your unit is not DTS and Dolby certified and licensed you will be out of luck.

You can only transmit from a BD player via HDMI unless your unit has multichannel analog inputs, to send discrete audio channels after the player does the conversion. You could only send the video if you unit has component video inputs. So your unit and the player would have to have multichannel audio outs inputs and outputs respectively and component outputs and inputs for video.

Basically what it boils down to now there is a forcing of HDMI for high def video and audio, to all intense and purposes. A unit without HDMI is pretty much worthless and obsolete for high definition video and audio.

So you got yourself a raw deal I suspect.

I could not download a manual for your unit. I found a link, but it kept giving me error. It sounds as if your unit is even lower down the food chain than anything marketed here and that is quite an achievement. Can you send me a link where I could download a manual?

Thanks for all the info. I was just looking for a basic set up for my bedroom after my last receiver broke. So I wasn't expecting hi-def from the unit (just DTS and DD 5.1).

The Tevion system that I have was made approx 5 years ago. I have the manual so if there's any section in it that I can check you can let me know.

One more question: is the matrix surround analog or digital? Thanks

It could be either. I can't go any further unless I can download your manual. I have given you all the information I can given the circumstances.

If you don't see the certified logos and licenses for DTS and Dolby in your manual, then it will not be allowed to decode them. The logos should be on your unit also. If you don't see them anywhere then you need a new receiver. Hint: - Get one with HDMI.
