Subwoofer distance from back wall

How close to the back wall should a subwoofer be? I'm asking about sealed or front ported subwoofer not a rear ported subwoofer. Is it ideal to put it a close as possible against the back wall or is there a certain optimal distance that is recommended?

Depends how much boundary gain, port direction isn't very meaningful as subs more omniradiate. If you do put a port near a wall it's generally advised to distance it at least twice the diameter of the port. How did you determine the back wall is the best placement?
