Subwoofer Connection

When I bought a new home theatre system, I decided to use my old pre-amp + stereo amplifier for another room which has B&W in-wall speakers and a wall mounted volume switch. The bass was not deep enough for me, so I bought an M&K subwoofer and hooked it up by running an AR subwoofer cable from the pre-amp out and the amplifier line out to the subwoofer. No matter what volume level I had the subwoofer at, it sounded too loud and too booming. Am I doing something wrong or is there a better way to wire this set up? Also, the AR cable came with a Y connector. Should the Y be used coming out of the pre-amp or amp? Should the Y be used going into the subwoofer? Do I need a other Y -- one for both ends of the cable (pre-amp/amp and subwoofer?) Do I need 2 subwoofer cables (right and left)? Finally, would I be better off just using speaker cable? If so, what would be powering the subwoofer: the pre-amp/amp or the subwoofer's own internal amp?

Hi there....first: is this right? subwoofer cable from the pre-amp out and the amplifier line out to the subwoofer. You should pick one or the other, you don't need both. Second: is the sub a powered sub? if so just use the pre-amp output to the sub....also does the sub have a built in x-over, if not you might need to buy a in-line passive x-over for it...if the sub is passive you will need to come from the amp to the sub.
