sub on hardwood floor or rug

I'm moving into a new home and am getting new system, axiom epic gran master 500. I know where the sub is located within the room makes huge difference but does hardwood vs on a rug make that big of deal. I am probably going to have to have someone retro wire my room, plus the wife wants new furniture so I am trying to incorporate everything into a layout plan. The wife is not so interested so I have to be slick. She is all for a great HT as long as it is nice looking and unobtrusive. Thanks

A rug or mat under the sub would be the preferred method. It helps to decouple the subwoofer from the floor, which reduces vibration transmission and associated floor boom. So the bass cleans up nicely.

There is also a product called the Auralex Subdude specifically designed for this.

I use the Auralex Great GRAMMA under my sub on hardwoods; cleaned up the sound a lot.
