Sub level in line with speakers ?

Hi

I have all my speakers callibrated to 75db at level 0db on my yammy 2600 reciever. what level db should i callibrate my sub to ? 75db also or higher.

The reason i ask is that on the avia disc they say in one section that cinema levels are 105db for speakers and 115db for subs but in the home you would lose 20db ( or the neighbours will sue you ) so I read that as 85db speakers and 95db sub . still to high for my smallish room so i dropped to 75db for all.

However in the callibration tones for subs they ask you to callibrate your speaker to 70db and sub the same to level it off.

sorry but i hate conradictions when they are from the same source

75 dB as well, but with a few caveats:
1. If you are using the Radio Shack SPL meter, it is off a little bit in the very low frequencies (~2-3 dB on average) so many will calibrate the sub slightly higher to account for that.
2. Personal preference - some people like the sub slightly hotter and will calibrate it slightly higher.

Me, I don't bother with corrections because at very low frequencies your ears can't detect a 2 - 3 dB difference unless the amplitude is VERY high.

105 dB is the PEAK volume (when the digital level is 0 dBFS) and 115 dB for the LFE channel (these are Dolby Reference Levels). If you used the receiver's internal test tones and calibrated to 75 dB that is exactly what you will get! The internal test tones are at -30 dB and 75+30=105.

You have it calibrated correctly.

There is an automatic +10dB offset included during the decoding for DD and DTS and this is not represented in the test tone, so calibrated level should be 75dB as you have it. Most people I've seen also run it hot. I run mine about +1.
