Sub $2k Pre/Power suggestions

Thanks, Seth. I have been considering that route as well. I'm a little concerned about the spotty background of Behringer, but I've read the thread and lots of folks seem to like them.

BTW, any opinions on the 659 vs 6090/1700 are welcome as well, although I know that's a bit of thread drift.

Biggest problem I have with the 659 and HTR are the aesthetics. Looks low end to me, I know thats silly but what can I say. They sure get good reviews though.

Behringer amps are just like other amps, they take a signal, amplify it, and does it transparently no colorations.

OK, after perusing the on-line manuals, I'm back to favoring the RX-V2700.

Perhaps I'm placing too much emphasis on this, but I really like the fact that the 2700 gives full control over the PEQ - 7 bands (two below 200 Hz) and you can control the frequency, the gain, and the Q factor for all channels & all speakers. The 1700 gives a more traditional GEQ, with 7 fixed bands & no Q control, while the 659 only gives a GEQ for the center channel.

This seems like it would be worth the expense. I'm sure it's easier to make the sound worse than better, but I'm a tinkerer by nature so this appeals to me.

Also, Gene's comments about the 2700 delivering 272 watts into 1 channel @ 4 ohms doesn't hurt either. Think I'll wait for the review.

I am sure the 2700 is a powerhouse, and unless you use the networking audio thing, it should perform flawlessly. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

It looks that way, unless you are willing to consider matching the Emotiva prepro with some cheaper pro amps or used equipment.

Sorry to have spent my time offering an opinion. Some people are not aware that a receiver can be used as a pre-pro. You were a new member, so I thought you may need to be informed with this option as well, so I agreed with Seth. Also, 99.9% of the members here with seperates under 2k use a receiver as a pre-pro, myself included.

Alternatively if you want to spend around $2k on separates, consider the Emotiva Reference Theater Series:

It has a nice meaty amp (similar to the MPS-1 but non modular and slightly less power). Although it doesn't have all the latest features of say a Denon/Yamaha receiver, it is simplier to use and has a much meatier power section.

I like that Meatier power . Simple use is also a good thing .
Sure speaker are the 1st to upgrade , but what after you get your ears get sick of that sound .
The best recommendation i have seen yet .
You can also look at audiogone.com , there is some used Sunfire gear you can put together for under 2k and blow away most recommedations here . Your ears will love you .

sorry for the NOOB hijack - i own the V659 and am looking at upgrading to the Pioneer 82TX. i plan on demoing the new unit this weekend so figured i better make sure i;m getting the full sound out of my current amp so can do a true comparison. so i have speant the last few days tinkering to no end. i have surprisingly been able to pull alot more oomph out of my system by doing so. the Yammy auto set up was good but it had my rears set to large etc....

ANYWAY what is PEQ and GEQ? as you mentioned i can only seem to make adjustments to GEQ, and this is only for the centre channel? whats the point of that? i thought i was adjusting all the speakers...?

Ive never heard any emotiva gear in person or even seen any but i like what i read about them & so far dealing with their customer support has been as good as big time high end guy's like mcintosh & krell,if i were you i'd seriously consider looking into emotiva,infact i am you,they will be getting my business very soon for a new 2 channel amp & preamp ive been itching to try,they are the first mid to high end manufacturer ive been excited about in a long time.

As far as emotiva being a new company there is nothing to indicate that they are having any trouble,all indications point to that company being around for a long time,they are bringing out new products,they are getting excellent press & lots of scuttlebut is being passed around about them in the high end circles,i also think that if you talk to their customer support about their amp & pre designs you'll find out that they are based on tried & true designs not untested technology.
