this might sound stupid but with the OPPO DV-981HD if my tv only has a dvi connection can i still use a hdmi to dvi cable to my tv and still receive upscaling and all that stuff what i f i connect it to my receiver with hdmi then from my reciever to my tv with hdmi to dvi will it also be able to upscale
and also my tv is only 1080i its a 55inch bought it 3 years ago so thats why no hdmi and 1080p(will i still receive higherquality with the oppo then my current dvd player)

Yes, you should be able to use a HDMI-DVI cable. HDMI and DVI are identical for carrying digital video signals. Just keep in mind DVI does not carry audio, so you will need to connect your audio some other way. Your display must be HDCP compliant, however. Good luck! :)

I think you can. I have the Oppo 971 with the DVI output. I have a DVI to HDMI conversion cable connecting the player to the HDMI input of my receiver. My Oppo upconverts to 1080i through its DVI output. I think your Oppo does the same upconversion through it's HDMI output. All you need is a HDMI to DVI conversion cable, then you can connect the HDMI output of your dvd player to the DVI input of your TV.

I think HDCP is the wildcard here. There's a chance that the oppo won't output higher than 480P since your display doesn't support HDCP. Perhaps there is a hack to disable this "feature" of the oppo? This is more complicated if you go through a receiver, since that may be a passthru or upscaler itself.

Oppo DVD player

The Oppo DV971HD has a DVI output, upsclaes to 1080i, and I think it doesn't have HDCP. It or the DV970 might work better for your application. Any of the Oppo models should be a good video upgrade from an entry level progressive scan DVD player.

If you contact Oppo, I have seen them simply send you out a HDMI-DVI cable.
