Streaming Video on PS3

There is a local news website that streams live broadcasts.

When I go to the site and try to get it to Stream all I get is the status bar.

Do I need to download a player to get it to work ???

I would imagine that it's a flash video and I don't think the PS3 can play those (not sure though). You might want to have a look on the Official Playstation Community Forums.

Download PlayOn to your computer. Setup a media server on the PS3 and you can watch Netflix, Hulu, CBS, YouTube, CNN, and ESPN on your TV via the PS3. I've been using it for a few days and it seems to work well. If your wireless signal is less than 75% it will have issues streaming.
