Stereo Decoding?

For old movies or TV shows that were not recorded in 5.1. How do I set up my receiver to get it to sound on Stereo mode?

Were they simply recorded in mono or stereo? Just use the appropriate sound mode on your avr, most default to the signal received. What are the specifics of your source and receiver involved?
