Starter speakers, or some sort of solution?

I recommend buying an Onkyo home theater in a box system. The supplied receivers are feature rich and they're full scale receivers unlike the Philips you had. The supplied speakers are better than the package you linked above. Bang for buck you are not likely to find anything new that comes all together that will over their level of performance. If you ever wish to upgrade to better speakers at a later time you can do that.

Best Buy sells an Insignia brand home theater in a box system with a rather large powered subwoofer (considering it's a home theater in a box). The system is made by Onkyo for Best Buy.
I agree with this...

Don't waste your money.
Could you elaborate? Cnet seemed to think they were pretty decent for the price, so what is it that makes you go the complete oposite direction from that?

But once again, I don't want to go back to an HTiB or soundbar type setup... I would like to get a real receiver, and I'm a particular fan of the Yamaha one I pointed out.

What do you guys think about these:
For only $78.30 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 5.1 Channel Home Theater Satellite Speakers & Subwoofer *- Black | Home Theater Speaker Systems

They're reasonably priced, have a pretty decent review with cnet, and are a full 5.1 that I could replace bits at a time.
Buy them if you want - however, the Pioneer will have a richer,
and more full sound. The Monoprice looks like one that maybe,
will sound decent in a walk-in closet.

This is a real receiver, but if you want yamaha get that. Then figure out your speakers.

I guess I wasn't clear enough. The Onkyo home theater in a box systems are not like your Philips htiab. It comes witha real receiver with real receiver features and connection options. At least look at what they have to offer before burying your head in the sand.

Exactly, it's a real receiver that happens to come with decent speakers and a powered subwoofer that can be replaced later in time if he wants to. In any case the speakers and receiver will far surpass the performance of the puny Philips system.

For twice the price, and 2 speakers with no sub, yes, they are better quality I'm sure. I think you're missing the point of my query: for the price, will I be able to get by with them and not just be angry as a squirrel who lost his nuts (I'm really tired, I have no idea where that came from) that I bought them, until I can upgrade to a $600-700 speaker set?

In other words, are you saying the Monoprice speakers are really that terrible, or just that you assume they are terrible because they are cheap and from monoprice? Read any reviews or heard them yourself? Maybe know some stats I don't know? Something solid I can work from is what I'm asking.

I'm sorry, I did a piss-poor job of reading that post apparently. I remember reading it the first time and them only being listed as a HTiaB... I see now that you clearly said it has a full receiver. I will definitely give those some consideration.
