Never tried online gambling but I have bet on the Steelers to win the SB when in Vegas. Only $20 and I almost won when they went to the SP 10 years ago or so. I also occasionally play the Fla. lotto and Powerball when it gets big enough. Probably a hundred or 2 hundred dollars a year. Oops, maybe I have a problem. :)
I won $15 on a $2 dollar Fla. lotto today so I took the cash and bought another $2 Fla lotto. I never bother with scratch offs.

Your Steelers bet story is legendary, and it's cool that you've got that Vegas memory!

Anyone here bet on sports?
Who Loses as Online Betting Takes Over Sports? | The Walrus

Gambling of any kind has never held any appeal for me - even as a younger man ("the" gambling demographic). On very rare occasions (every couple of years, maybe?), I'll buy a lottery ticket. I've dropped a few quarters in slot machines in the local casino once or twice since it opened 30-odd years ago. That's about it.

Beer and car commercials used to dominate during the hockey games I watch. Now, it seems to be all gambling. There are even segments of the broadcast dedicated to it. I find it all so off-putting that it sucks the enjoyment out the match. Knowing that the odds are weighted in favour of the house doesn't help - the more you gamble, the less likely it is that you'll come out on top.

It's not so much a morality thing for me - I just wonder if we're creating another version of the opioid crisis.

Anyone else feel the same way?
I don't bet on sports, gamble at casinos, pitch pennies or play games of chance. Well, I have been to the local casino twice- the first time, I made my donation and the second time, I did pretty well because I came up with a system. No, really- I have a system..... :)

I'm going back, to see if it will work again.

A friend has gone to casinos many times, to play cards- he has done very well on occasion, but that's balanced by the losses. The odds are definitely in favor of the house- I watched a show about gambling and saw that the odds for Roulette had been worked out ago and the green numbers were added to make 50/50 odds impossible.

Sports betting can be a real roller coaster, can’t it? I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs with it. It’s like playing a game of solitaire, where sometimes you make the right moves, and everything clicks, while other times you can’t get ahead. I think what makes it exciting is the thrill of the unknown. You never know how a game will turn out.
I’ve found that setting a budget helps me keep things in check. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget about limits. I also love researching teams and players; it gives me a little edge. Overall, it’s all about enjoying the process and not getting too stressed about the outcome.

Have you gone back to test your "system"? And if so, did it work out for you?

No- not interested. I'm just not the kind of person who thinks "I can bet on something and have little chance of winning? THAT'S for ME!"

I don't bet on sports, gamble at cаsinos, pitch pennies or play games of chance. Well, I have been to the local cаsino twice- the first time, I made my donation and the second time, I did pretty well because I came up with a system. No, really- I have a system..... :)

The odds are definitely in favor of the house- I watched a show about gambling and saw that the odds for Roulette had been worked out ago and the green numbers were added to make 50/50 odds impossible. Over time I realized that on a gаmbling site the chance to win is much higher than in a land-based cаsino, so I only play there.
It's great that you're aware of this and approach it with a sense of fun rather than expectation.

Yeah, the odds are definitely stacked against you in the long run, which makes it tough to see the appeal. Well, it's easy to see how it could turn into a serious issue, kind of like what happened with the opioid crisis but in a different way. It's not just about losing money—it's about how it can change people's habits and even their lives.
If you’re curious about how to manage the risks if someone does decide to bet, there’s actually a pretty interesting article at https://www.fanthatracks.com/blogs/risk-management-in-live-sports-betting/ . Basically, it breaks down some ways to bet more responsibly, which might be useful for anyone trying to navigate this stuff without getting too deep.

I think I'd like to take the Steelers to win the SB this year. That would be a nice payoff for a pretty lowly rated team.
