Hi,

I have a television with dysfunctional audio. I only want to use it for gaming and was wondering if I could buy a cheap speaker system to hook up my xbox to with the audio jacks of my composite cable, sort of like how a PC is hooked up to it's speakers. I don't really care for dobly surround sound or anything of the sort; I just want regular stereo sound for gaming.

Self-powered computer speakers should work. Since the usually have a minijack connection, you would need to buy an adapter that terminates in a female stereo minijack on one end and a stereo pair of male RCA connectors on the other. You can get these a Radio Shack for about six bucks. Just plug 'em in and you're good to go.

I bought some Logitech speakers on eBay for about 20 bucks. It actually included the RCA adapter that was necessary in the box.

The above image is not correct for most computer speakers since they only connect with a male 1/8" stereo mini connector.

The exact cable name you need is a 1/8" mini female to rca stereo female connectors.

This is an eBay link for the product, so it may not work:

Cripes - the only one I can find is 1/8" mini female to RCA stereo male... go figure.

But here is a pic of it...

EDIT: Bingo! Here is the link with a photo of what came in the box with my speakers:

The picture IS a 1/8" stereo mini MALE connector.

With the BMXTRIX picture above you would need an additional two rca cables to connect into the female ends of the Y from the pictured cable because the TV also has female jacks. That is not the exact cable you need unless you buy the exact same speakers or ones with similar connections.

It all depends on what computer speakers you end up buying. Mine have FEMALE jacks on the back and you need a cable with 1/8" stereo mini (male) connectors on both ends to connect to a sound card. For that kind of speaker, the link I provided is exactly what you need to connect from a TV's audio outs to that kind of speaker.

Regardless, I think you can see what is required now. Just match up the proper cable to whatever speakers you end up buying. It's not that complicated.

MDS - I think most cheap computer speakers have a built in cable that come off of them. I wasn't thinking about the cable being removable directly from the computer speaker itself. If so, then what you posted makes MUCH more sense to me! :D

If the computer speakers have a permanently attached cable then the end of that cable will likely be a 1/8" mini stereo male connector - then you need the breakout cable I showed.

If the computer speakers have a removable 1/8" mini stereo jack and you are left with a female 1/8" mini stereo connection, then use the cable that MDS showed.

I'll check my speakers at home... Maybe my 1/8" is removable from the speakers directly. Not sure why I was thinking it wasn't. I was definitely working from the other end of things though.

Try a old HI-fi VCR ($10 to $20 ) from a pawn shop and run your audio through there .:)

The composite cable for the Xbox has RCA Phono Male connectors for audio L , R. Depending on the speakers you choose, you may need an adapter or not. Sometimes the speakers ship with an adapter.

Buy the speakers you want, if your available connection options dont work, tell us what you got and we will tell you what you need to make it work.

or, when you decide to buy the speakers (assuming at a physical store), take the Xbox cable with you and see if it will work.

Guys, I'm having serious problems finding the 1/8" mini female to rca stereo female connectors. However, I did find This

Would these work if I just pluged in normal desktop speakers into them rather than to a set of Logitech® 5.1 multimedia speakers?

That looks like what you can use... Or you can use this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/3-5mm-stereo-female-mini-jack-to-2-male-RCA-Y-adapter_W0QQitemZ230069057788QQihZ013QQcategoryZ32833QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

with this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ATLONA-DOUBLE-RCA-FEMALE-COUPLER-FOR-AUDIO-CABLE-A-V_W0QQitemZ130059937822QQihZ003QQcategoryZ33205QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

If links don't work - go to e Bay and search for RCA couplers (second link) and RCA to mini (first link).

If you have a 5.1 audio system, you won't get that out of the stereo outputs from your game system directly, so the Logitech product you listed above likely just distributes stereo to all connected speakers.

Radio Shack usually has met my needs for unusual connectors for not much money You can check it out on the web first.
