Well... I'm going to be making some speaker stands pretty soon for these bad boys:

Now I have quite a bit of carpentry experience, however, I want to ask about things that will make them better than regular "store bought" stands.
Things like base width, spikes, rubber matting, ect...

Basically small details, or do you think I should just go for it? :D

On a unrelated note... I need something to hold this crap:

:D :D :D

I think there are a lot of advantages to building your own. I am considering it myself when I get new speakers. I want something a little more stable than what you can buy for a reasonable price. I have two curious cats that would be constantly knocking over a lot of stands I've seen.

I'm considering 3" PVC for the stems, closet flanges to attach to the top and bottom and MDF or plywood for the base and shelf. You could make something fancier, as well. The most expensive parts would be the flanges. I'm still trying to find a less expensive alternative. As part of the process, I would fill the PVC pipe with playground sand.

Building your own stands is definetly a good way to go. The biggest advantage to doing it yourself is that you can design them to look the way you want and to match the height you want and the speakers they are for and to use the materials you want. It might not end up being much cheaper than buying stands but you'll probably end up with something nicer. (there are some pretty nice stands out there but they arent too cheap)

When I build stands for my Axiom M3's I just used to leftover 2x6 cedar for the base and uprights and some old mahogany peices for the top. I cut the top to fit the axioms perfectly because they have the cabinets that are wider at the front than the back. I think they turned out great. Havent even bothered to put a finish on them or spikes yet though. They didnt cost me anything, and i could have bought something nicer but sometimes its just more fun to build it yourself.

I still play mine; I'm the original owner, still in mint-ish condition.
You'll also see my Sega Dreamcast game if you look close enough.

Well... I got rid of my temp speaker stands, and my Studio 20's are in a very poor location at the moment, so I'll be working fast to make my speaker stands.

Just getting the last design elements down pat, and then I'll start cutting.

How about a Christmas toast of Budweiser to everyone tomorrow while I start working on them? :D

If you are tight on space, probably the best answer is a DVD binder. That's what I did for all my DVD's when I brought them to college. I'll probably put them all back once I get an apartment, but it sure is convenient.

Also, Sonic on Genesis = Best games ever? Overall, a nice selection of stuff. I'm replaying FFX right now. :D

Yetti is very protective and meticulous with his optical software, he will never put them in a binder. Binders are the devil.;):D

I'd say that they serve thier purpose quite nicely. Sure, it's not as nice as having them in their cases, but it's a hell of a lot smaller. I probably srunk the size my DVD/Video Game Collection probably about 10x
