OK, OK. I'll back off. My problem may be that I like bright speakers. I was one of the few who used to boost treble back in the tone control days.

However, I still can't see how you can have a darker sound presentation without adding bass. It's just too counterintuitive for me.

Yeah, I vote for no Equalization as well.
Messing with the equalizer and tone controls screws up the sound for me 100% of the time.

Are there any preamps out there that do not even have tone controls to begin with (besides my old Acurus preamps which probably won't last 10 more years)?

I don't want to have to DEFEAT the tone controls.

See, I'm already thinking about upgrades.:D

I would like class-A line-stage analog preamps with absolutely no tone controls whatsoever.

For what its worth, the YAPO seems to be doing its flat response function fine for me. I have never measured it with the SPL meter because I like the way it sounds. Mine has no excess 5 kHz silibance. I don't think it is the fault of the YAPO function but you can check it quite easily. Once you have calibrated with YAPO and you hear silibance, then press "Pure Direct" which bypasses all processing. If the silibance goes away, then YAPO is probably the problem or part of it anyway. If the silibance is still there or greater, then the silibance is probably in the speakers or room acoustics. Either way you are probably in a situation where your room acoustics are part of the problem. I would recommend reading and posting on the forum that covers room acoustics and you may get more answers.
