It's just not the best way to describe your use. Flat usually refers to flat frequency response, not the lack of eq to get there. Why aren't you setting delays (distance)? Sony never had Audyssey either.

No, two speakers; one that I listened to, enjoyably and without problems, for twenty years; Have any of your speaker systems been in continuous use for 20 year, or longer? blew.
and another that Polk agrees is covered under warranty have distortion issues/blew.
...as noted those birds are flown and the is no sense in belaboring an expired equine...

Just for user interest I asked for the cost of one of polk's 6.5" mid-range drivers, if it wasn't covered by warranty and they said $65.... surprisingly reasonable, IMO. (other than the "turbine cone (the speaker motor is nearly identical with one of the mids that I have in stock, for potential builds.
In the roughly 60 years that I have spend dealing with home audio I may have contributed to 2 drivers' failure; ...Honestly.

This will be the first warranty repair that I have ever participated in...

Is there a nit that you won't pick?
I am setting distances but there is another setting in the Denon control software that specifies delay (something to do with bass or subwoofers, if i recall correctly (and the chances of that get slimmer every day...)... My first high quality subwoofer is due tomorrow RBH so I will likely encounter the delay setting.... soon.
I am, now, pretty sure that it was NOT Audyssey,

$65 is definitely a lot cheaper than buying new speakers.

I agree; and will, definitely have to revisit my description which was based on a short term failure.
...although I still like SVS; Those $2k beauties still look interesting; even more than the $1k speakers...

Just trying to understand what you're saying. Distance is just another term for delay, and is applcable to all channels...not sure what that other delay for a sub is particularly, not sure what the connection with a new sub would be particularly outside of that. Sony uses their own DCAC for their auto setup/eq program.

So far everything I’ve seen here seems like a lateral move from the R700. Now if you’re going to the 3.5K range for the RBH 8300 towers, that’s another story.
 
The speaker/toy budget is about shot for the summer; It will be at least fall, before the toy/mad-money budget will withstand an upgrade...
I need to do a lot of research and make up my mind before then... but a 3.5 to $4k set of mains should/would not be unreasonable.
... the r700s could be shifted to rear duty...and the NHTs could; finally, be retired.

... Honestly; my ears are aging and I am much less able to distinguish some of the finer differences between speakers; so I may not be able to hear the difference if exposed to truly great speakers... age and life happens; just wait a while...

Have you tried the NHTs as mains since you fixed them?

Yeah, if you don’t have a comfortable budget, then just keep what you have, instead of making lateral moves. Spend $65 on the driver. Call it a day. :D

Nope, I have been a bit busy and am paranoid about them (30 watt mid range drivers)...
They are living and performing well as rear speakers.

I changed out the Polk driver for a generic midrange from stock that except for the "turbo pattern" in the cone seems very similar... sounds ok.... as an interim fix.

I rate, as unlikely, that the crown amp could have blown the mid; first the speakers are rated for 300 watts and so is the Crown.
Second the crown was never maxed out and likely never will be. The gain settings are at roughly 60% and I don't expect to change them (this amp is basically a "set and forget").
