I was on the way to the store before I read Gaunlet Thrown. I currently have NO receiver (only tv set sound). Do I buy the sony or wait for the Yamaha? A month plus is long time to wait for recent sound. When could I have the 663 in hand?

All,

I was an attempted early adopter of HD in Jan. 2001. I purchased a top of the line Mitsu 1080i set (circa 2001). Due to HD and sat content problems, I never really got the HD experience. I'm upgrading to DirecTV HD soon. My current receiver (Integra DTR 7.1) has no HDMI imputs and my TV has no HDMI. What is the maximum resolution I'll get with DrectTV HD and the current set up and how do I cable/switch to get it? What are my alternatives? Or, am I screwed and have to get a new TV and receiver? Thanks in advance.
what happened to the integra?

Integra DTR7.1 is downstairs hooked up to circa 1080i Mitsu TV. Upstairs is the new Sony with no freaking receiver!

so what speakers are you getting? It seems your post is lacking detail and description as to what and how you want to achieve. It would be helpful. As you stated some distress as to purchasing a new receiver for down stairs, but no hesatation to purchasing one for your bedroom. Do you and your wife plan on making your bedroom the primary veiwing room? Just trying to ascertain what your really looking for, sorry if you took offence to me asking the question, as you stated no receiver, which would imply just that

Basically, I'm trying to create 2 systems that have good/great audio and video:

System 1 (old): Integra DTR7.1 (no hdmi), circa 2001 50" mitsu (no hdmi), directv hd (soon), psb speakers

System 2 (new, upstairs): No receiver yet, 40" Bravia, directv hd (soon), speakers (currently researching with the help of this site)

So, you can see the dilemma, nice audio in one place, nice picture in the other. I'd like to get good sound on system 2 but do I wait for the new Yamaha?

the yama would be prudent, and the small wait worth while. The speakers will be the cricial link in the chain. Im not a huge fan of sony consumer electronics, especially their av recveirs, and do not feel good about recommending them. I have personal and prfessional expeirence with yamaha and do not hesitate giving them the nood(especially this one with the features) You might consider swapping your current unit to the bedroom, and using the yamaha in the living room(or flip the whole system) as you could benefit from the audio codecs(is the bluray in the living room?).

Ok, the new Yamaha it is for the upstairs Sony TV system. I just read over in the deals section that they can be had from J&R via phone pre-order for around 400. Unfortunately, I can't flip the system because of size issues with the Mitsu. I would like to get a good/very good system upstairs with Sony 40 and somehow rehabilitate the older system downstairs. I'm very happy with the PSB speakers on the Mitsu system and I'm currently searching for speakers for the upstairs system. All of my speaker knowledge has come from this site, so I think I'm heading in the right direction. Any thoughts are appreciated. Room size: 20W x 14D x10H.
