1080i TV, no HDMI

I was an attempted early adopter of HD in Jan. 2001. I purchased a top of the line Mitsu 1080i set (circa 2001). Due to HD and sat content problems, I never really got the HD experience. I'm upgrading to DirecTV HD soon. My current receiver (Integra DTR 7.1) has no HDMI imputs and my TV has no HDMI. What is the maximum resolution I'll get with DrectTV HD and the current set up and how do I cable/switch to get it? What are my alternatives? Or, am I screwed and have to get a new TV and receiver? Thanks in advance.

with component video you should be fine, just check the lables on the tv inputs as for mitsu use to have different resolutions for different component inputs.

also didnt you post about getting a new lcd tv?

Yes, I did post about a new TV. We just got a Sony 40" for the bedroom. Wifey said I'm sick of this TV so I seized the opportunity before she changed her mind. Then, we went TV shopping and she said, wow, I really like that Sony. Again, I seized the opportunity.

For your receiver hookup, I would use the optical out on your cable box to the optical in on your receiver. I would run the RCA audio cable from your cable box to your TV. If you don't have toslink optical (or audio coaxial) connections on your receiver, I don't think you can get Dolby 5.1 inputs to your reciever. The best you can get is stereo (matrixed surround sound). If that is the case get a pair of RCA cable "Y" splitters and run one cable to your TV and the other to your receiver. Hope that helps.

Component video can handle 1080i with no problem. That's what I use from my Mororola/comcast box to my Toshiba.

The problem arises when your source component manufacturer decides to force one to use HDMI, such as upscaling DVD players seem to do.

Technically, there's no reason one cound not pass 1080p via component either, but it's somewhere in the specs that it's not allowed. Ergo, you'll not find a component that passes 1080p via component, or at least I can't think of any.

I'm running my DTV HD DVR (HR20-100) via component through my Denon 3805 into my Toshiba 56H80 (purchased in Jan 2001) at 1080i with no problems at all. Both HD and BD DVD will also output 1080i via component into your TV. No need to upgrade your TV just yet.

I used to have a Mistubishi RP HDTV, and it had a DVI connection. Does yours? If so, you could just bypass your receiver and go directly to the TV via an HDMI-to-DVI cable. Then use coaxial cables to the TV for sound from the TV, and a fiber optic cable to the receiver for sound from the receiver.
