December 20, 2007 — Sony has become the latest manufacturer to dump its rear-projection television line.

"We are moving our resources toward LCD TV, because that's what people really want," a spokesperson told TWICE. The company will sell off existing stocks of SXRD and 3LCD products, then join Toshiba and Hitachi in the post-RPTV universe.

Coda from Gizmodo: "We have confirmed that this means no 70XBR5 70-inch SXRD!! One of our favorite TVs of the 2007 lineup will now just be a fondly remembered one-night stand. We knew the delay sounded suspicious."

In relative terms, Sony actually does well in RPTV, with a number one shelf share, says the NPD Group. But the category as a whole is declining and flat panels are where it's at. By jettisoning RPTV models, which generally sells for less per square inch, Sony can concentrate on larger LCD sizes, which is where the money is.

Although the LCD (and to a lesser extent plasma) categories are still selling like gangbusters, eventually they too will mature and possibly disappear, or at least move downmarket as RPTVs did. Just a few months ago, Sony introduced its first OLED (organic light emitting diode) display in Japan. The 11-inch panel is just 3mm thick at its thinnest portion. A U.S. launch is not contemplated till 2010, and whether OLED can scale up to home theater worthy sizes remains to be seen. But eventually manufacturers will need a new profit center.

RPTV's were the cheap solution for a big screen. Now the plasmas and LCDs are going bigger and cheaper. There's no reason to buy one now. PQ and bulb replacement are a pain. Now all they have to do is to concentrate on BLACK LEVELS.

Wish more people owned a big screen now so my movie rental place could start getting more 16:9 content instead of 4:3. Only 2/11 Simpsons are in widescreen format :(

Wow, so that leaves who? Samsung and Mitsubishi? All I can say is I hope Mitsubishis' laser based DLP is all it's cracked up to be. If that technology turns out to be viable and poduce a good picture it could be RPTVs' saving grace.

And what does that mean for us RPTV owners? Will there come the day when we won't be able to buy a new bulb for our RPTV? And how soon is that day coming?

JVC's still in the game, but I think they're down to 3 models.

if you invested in a LED DLP, you probably won't need a new bulb ever, but my advice is stock up on a few extra bulbs while they are still easy to find.

Sonnie over at the Shack is getting a 61" Samsung LED rear projection for around $2000. I am starting to want one, AAAAHHHHH

I say good ridance. Never cared for the technology anyway.

I think Hitachi said they were also droping rear projection. Sony also stopped production of CRTs.

I have to agree, I never really liked a RP set, ever. My neighbors have a huge Mitsubishi, don't know the model, and it looks okay at best. The thing looks pretty good if you are sitting at the exact "sweet spot", but if you aren't, well, it looks pretty bad.

In the old days, if you wanted a really big TV, you didn't have a lot of choice, but with the choices out there now, I don't know why anyone would buy one.

I just bought a 73" Mitsubishi DLP RP set, for the money ($2500 out the door) you simply can't get more screen size per dollar. A flat panel LCD or Plasma of that size would cost at least 3 times as much and probably weigh a whole lot more. I'm not knocking them, but I think I am getting good value, and once the set is calibrated it will look fantastic. I've seen plenty of very good looking RP sets, and don't see why anyone wouldn't want one, unless they just gotta have thier tv wall mounted.
