My principal instrument was tuba...To offer any possibly useful advice, people would need to know a bit about you. Location, age, skills, work experience, etc...
This world ain't gettin' any easier and schooling helps. Trade schools included. No offense, going to school for music won't really assure food on the table in the future unless you shoot for teaching, and even that's not guaranteed. I haven't seen too many want ads for rock stars.
I'm 20, living in Ohio. As far as skills, it depends. I'm a very advanced pc user, and generally have a good understanding of all things electrical and mechanical. I've been building PA cabinets on and off for the past three years. I occasionally make money on them, but generally I don't.
Here's some builds: http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b171/WafflesOMD/Cabinet builds/
People don't really seem to care about what I can do unless there's a piece of paper to back it up.
I tried to for several years to get hired by a touring group, but that never happened. I'm well qualified and would do an excellent job, but no one seemed interested.
I was planning on finishing up my associates at a CC and then transferring over to OU for their bach. in telecommunications, but there's no way in hell we'll ever be able to afford that.
