Solid component DVD player

My parents are looking to replace a Sony DVD player that is starting to wig out. The sony is their 2nd player in about 5 years. I am on my third player over about 7 years. What gives with DVD players? I'll admit that I've always bought a relatively cheap model, perhaps that's the problem?

Are there brands or models of DVD players out there that have a reputation of going and going and going? If so I'm interested.

My parents have an HDTV without HDMI so I'm looking for a solid component video DVD player that will last more than a couple of years. I'm open to the used market as well if some players carry a great reputation for reliability.

Please advise:)

Look for a Toshiba SD-9200 on ebay or audiogon. I have an SD-9000 which is non-progressive where the SD-9200 is. I see the SD-9200 on ebay quite frequently. I have had mine for 4-5 years, I purchased it used at a pawn shop for much less than retail, it was manufactured in 1999 and is still running strong. It doesn't play burnt material though.

There are plenty of flagship players of yesterday up on Ebay for reasonable prices, you just have to look.:)

I'll wait to convince my folks they need HD-DVD after they get a TV with HDMI.

Funny you should bring up Toshiba, my Dad is totally anti-Toshiba because according to him, Toshiba sold US submarine secrets to the Russians during the Cold War. He's got something against Panasonic as well, not sure why:)

I will have to keep looking.

Well I'd say that's unfortunate because I've found that Toshiba and Panasonic make some of the most reliable DVD players out there. I work at a service center and Panasonic has been the most trouble free of all the DVD players.

Have you looked at Denon? They make solid players in all price ranges.

I would say that would be a happy second.

You could talk your dad into getting the RCA HD-DVD player from Wal-Mart, just don't tell him it is made by Toshiba and he will be none the wiser.:D

Um, that one is $90 more bud. Not to mention it is a lower model.:D
D'OH! You’re right, that is a lower model.

But, in the used section, someone has it for $295. So you could have lower model for $94 less. :D
