Small sealed rear or PR surround speakers

Ok guys, I need to get some ideas for my HT.... I need small speakers that are adjustable and not flat wall mounted but will be very close to the wall. I prefer not to get ported speakers back there.

I don't want to spend alot on rear surrounds, but you all know I'm not cheap either.

I'll be upgrading all my Studio .v4's to Sig .v2's in the future but I honestly don't think I'll be needing to dump over $1K on Sig S1's to let them go to waste back there.

How about we toss out some ideas and see where it goes...

Here's a couple of pics to give idea for ref. as the room is corner laid out, same with rear...

Thanks in advance for ideas... :)

If you are open to an actual speaker. KEF 3000 eggs are fairly small with an excellent response. They are very easy to mount IMO. I use 2000 eggs and they are just fine with plenty of volume for surrounds.

Right now 2 of them are my fronts and they are even handling that.

Thanks

Also just a heads up, from the 3rd pic, they need to be able to be wall mounted on either side of the big plant, and able to be turned on an angle towards the LP if you catch my drift

come on guys...

No one has any suggestions that could help... I would love a good range of different products to sort through in a medium price range...

Hey, just saw this thread. Couple of q's. Second picture, at least to me, appears to have space behind couches? (but the other pic shows it right up against wall). Optical illusion, or you slide them forward?

And I honestly don't know (hoping you can tell me), but if a speaker was front ported, does it matter still?

You are thinking, roughly, $500 or so? I'll jog my brain some for ya. I figure, if you were thinking $750-800, ya might as well get the matching Sigs. Still, less that, I would think a different lower level Paradigm could be a good idea. If one can't match within the line, staying in the brand seems to be oft recommended.

I hope to chime in again soon with something or other, but no promises!

Are those the ones you was in Vegas...? Full Ribbon? I never caught the makeup of them... Link for more info....

The Sig S1 V.2 Cherry Black or Maple $1200 - $1350 give or take a bit...

Couch thing is an optical illusion... They have always been off the walls a couple feet... My issue is that I cant hang forward facing speakers off the wall, they need to be rotated perpeniduclarly from the base of the triangle if you will (of said corner).... did that make any sense..?:rolleyes::)

I have been looking for something that would be somewhat tight off the wall, and I have found it hard to find something sleek that hangs off the wall in a dignified manor in which to not draw way too much attention if you will.

The Sig S1 is an extremely amazing performing speaker from a measurement standpoint, but kinda stupid looking IMO, I have considered the W5, but good lord that thing is bank and super tall at 3ft H, and the studio esprit is still stupid expensive but could be do-able... :(

Two out of three of your requirements with the ERD-1 in it being small and sealed, you might have to come up with a mount to be able to adjust their position however.

.....maybe these Revels?

Thanks Matt, trying to shoot for the a somewhat elegant look.... Oh also the reason I was not interested in the ported, the port to me justs seems to add to much boundary interaction and contribution on the room, looking for something a little more focused...

Warp, it's always hard to know what people like in terms of elegance. BTW, I dig that "Dali" clock. :D I've seen a few of his paintings at museums, but it would be cool to go to a dedicated Dali museum. :D

I can't see anything said about these Swan 2.1 monitors being ported. Hmrz, not sure! Purty though.

EDIT: doh, Im afraid they are too large.... 15.2 x 8.0 x 11.9in

Revel Gem2---Way too big for you probably and in the price range of the Sig S1.

The other elegant speakers that I can think of right now that would somewhat match your Studio 100's are either way too big and deep or exceed the price of the Sigs. I'll browse around the interwebs tomorrow at work.;)

SVS is also coming out with new speakers to add to their S and M series

M on-wall / in-wall speaker based on the MBS model

S on-wall / in-wall speaker based on the SCS model

again, these are prototypes and i'm not even sure if i can post these pics ... but these are basically targetted for those with WAF problems. they're making these with with plenty of artwork and frame options.

unfortunately, i forgot to take pics of the M surround they have in the pipeline.
they're quite big ... and expensive i think - but at least you can choose your own artwork (release date: unknown)

What about something like the Energy RC-Mini. I know it's rear ported but I suspect that it's been designed to be wall mounted or on a bookshelf with close boundary interaction. They are small, good looking and sound pretty good to me.

Well I don't have a speaker suggestion but I do have a thought to give you a little space. Is there anyway you could cut a shelf into the walls? They wouldn't have to be big, just from stud to stud wide but they would give you a little more depth to fit the speakers in, well about 3" or so depending on how thick your walls are. That and you would have mounting covered, and since the walls angel away there would only be a bit of reflection off of them. Just some of the randomness that goes through my head.

@ Matt - yeah I think those are easily out of my budget and huge..

@ Mike - Thanks.... I assume they are ribbon, like a Magnepan...

@ Dave - def a no go on a rear ported, sealed or front ported.

Hibar... I cant go into the walls, there are ventilation ducts back there, but thanks for the idea... :)

Thanks Strongbad... your right, its not easy, I just want something unobtrusive for back there that doesn't stand out like a soar thumb...

Lots of great suggestions, I'll look into some of those... the Energy Take are very close to what I like in size.... nice and tight against the wall...

Keep em coming guys... :)

Audiogon now lists a number of NHT Close Outs. Scroll to the bottom of that page. It seems like the Absolute Two, Absolute Zero, or SuperZero XU might be suitable. All of them are smaller 2-ways in sealed cabinets.

I'm most familiar with the SuperZero XU because I have them as wall mounted rear channels in my system. They have a small 4.5" woofer and a 1" soft dome tweet, cabinets are 9" tall x 5.5" wide x 4.8" deep, weigh 5.1 lbs, and come with wall mount swivel brackets. I only rely on mine for movie surround sound (they are defined as small in my set up - no bass below 80 Hz) and I do not listen to 5-channel music. And you can't beat that price.

The seller doesn't say whether the other two models include wall mounting brackets, so I would assume they don't.

I don't know if you intend to use rear channel speakers for movies, 5-channel music, or both, but I do recommend the NHT SuperZeros XUs especially if you want them for surround sound movies. And they would be much less expensive than anything you could build.
