I have actually thought about doing some of my own speakers, but I'm afraid of dealing with the crossover... I can build subs, but I'm much less confident in putting together a speaker that will be any good...

Go full active! It is better than passive anyway. As long as you select quality components (drivers & tweeters) with even response up to and slightly past the x-over point and no large breakup modes, the behringer cx2310 works extremely well. It is cheap too ($79). As long as you have an inexpensive 4 channel amplifier it would work fantastic.

You can hire out the crossovers, but don't start with surrounds.

I just purchased a plate amp from them and it was a smooth transaction. IMO, the M-60 and Xds both qualify as "elegant".
