Ah, Chilly Beach.
The web site now directs to ToonRush but they have the above image in their library archive.
Chilly Beach started out as a couple of Canadian animators having some fun. A lot of web sites used Adobe Flash to add animation to the site and some enterprising individuals found that Flash worked as a decent tool for creating cartoons. The animation was crude but you could generate content easily. It started as some shorts and became so popular that the creators made full 20 minute episodes. They were originally available on the chillybeach.com web site and were so successful that they moved to broadcast television for a stint (2003 to 2006 according to wiki). Once the show moved to CBC television it garnered enough interest to gain guest appearances from the likes of William Shatner, Joe Flaherty, Leslie Nielsen, Elvis Stojko, Lawrence Gowan and David Suzuki. The show even aired in the U.S. for a while on Hulu.
Chilly Beach was full of Canadian stereotypes and tropes before political correctness became the order of the day. The main characters were die hard hockey fans of opposing teams mimicking the rivalry between the Toronto Maple Leads and Montreal Canadians. The restaurant owner was a French Canadian who wore ice skates indoors. He wanted his nephew to love hockey but his nephew secretly wanted to be a figure skater. The waitress was a preachy vegan. Across from the restaurant was an American consulate with typical American stereotypes. The police officer was a turban wearing Sikh and they also had a polite polar bear who typified British mannerisms.
The show was absolutely hilarious and hearkened back to comedic times when poking fun at stereotypes didn't offend everyone because more often than not you would find yourself among one of the groups and you couldn't help but laugh at yourself. They toned things down for the TV series as I recall some very gruesome bloody episodes with the polar bear apologizing while eating people. It was funny stuff but not kid friendly. Can't recall exactly how I happened upon that web site the first time but it showed off what you could do with Flash animation.
The
full series can be found on YouTube including a 70 minute and 90 minute movie. The first TV episode is below:
