High Def Digest gave this one 5 stars for video quality. I almost picked it up last night, but didn't...because I wasn't sure about the movie itself (only got 2 1/2).
I usually agree on Peter Bracke's reviews, and this one I would as well.
Although, I would like to see a better rating system of 1~10 over 1~5.
Reason in this case is, yes I would give Shrek a 5 (maybe 4 1/2) but the 2 1/2 really looks below average.
At which point on a 1~10 scale I would give it a 6 1/2. (above average, but well below a top score of a 8 to 10.)
I've only really disagreed on 2 movie reviews from him.
Top Gun HD DVD, I would have scored lower for PQ (specially with the poor cropping factor)
And Dirty Dancing BD, even though he gave it fair review, I would certainly give it MUCH lower score.
I actually did a side by side comparison of DD with my DVD, and the DVD was by far a more enjoyable watch.
The color issues in the BD version were so off, it truely took away from the pictures enjoyment.
I don't know what issues Jeff had, because his post is to vague.
But I would have to disagree. Although not the pinnacle of HDM (that would be Planet Earth BBC version), it ceratinly was very clean.
The only issue I slightly saw was, the colors a tad flat in scenes.
For the most part, the colors were vivid, black levels great, no added video noise, fairly 3D looking (specially on close-ups of Shrek with a blurred BG.
The textures were fantastic, specially Shrek's jacket (it looked more realistic than some REAL movies = aka: not animated)
I will agree on Planet Earth, it is the pinnacle of HD PQ. Albeit, there are a few scenes that are a little flat (although that is to be expected considering the nature of the scenes).
And I highly recommend Planet Earth for HD DVD and BD to anyone wanting to show off some demo material. (granted I have only seen the HD DVD version).
my .02
EDIT;
Oh yeah, BTW, I had rented this from Netflix.
So will I be adding it to the HD collection?? Yes, I have no problems adding it, will be a great movie when the kids are over.
Would I recommend it? Sure would, with the stipulation that NO the story is not as good as the first 2 movies (but not bad).
Granted, I really only like the first Shrek.
