So, I have an interesting situation. I there is a guy local that offered to buy my DIY sub. Between the materials, drivers, amp, finishing, mine was about $1250. I told him I would build a new one but TC Sounds prices are going up a substantial amount and that it would potentially cost 50% more. We ended up working out a price of $1500.

Now, with that I have two options. One would be to build another one, but with 18" drivers and even more power:D or just buy a beautiful SVS PB-13 ultra (or maybe a dual driver unit but they are huge).

What do you think? I know mine goes very low but I am not sure how beefy the SVS is. I am not sure what to do. I know for low end stuff, mine punishes the drywall/windows in the surrounding areas but it is not as musical as I had hoped. I do not want anything less in respect to raw power but I am curious to see if an SVS unit would be better. Too bad there are none local to audition.

For those who have not seen the progress of the build over the last couple month:

(1) TC-3000 15" quad VC
(2) TC-VMP 15" passives mass loaded for 17.2 Hz (mid 15's in room)
4.4 ft^3 enclosure - outside is Line-X'ed and it looks amazing
EP2500 amp loaded at 8 ohms nominal

Thanks.

All I can say is that SVS Ultra sub is getting awesome reviews and recommendations. You could order one, and just about sell it for what you paid if you don't like it. Loss would be very minimal.

It depends on how confident you are in your skills. If you feel certain you can build something better than the SVS for the same price, I say go for it.

Having never heard an SVS it's hard to say. A buddy of mine has a Martin Logan Depth and this absolutely destroys it and the owner agrees whole heartedly. Its a tough call. I am no super audio guru but I also know a great deal. Who knows...

does this help answer your question?

Personally, I would save the hassle of building another sub and just get the new ultra. It will look good, sound even better, be very musical, and will also come with a warranty and some of the best customer service you could possibly ask for. Not to mention you will have a very nice amp with lots of features and inputs, and some great finishes to choose from as well... You can still get in on the preorder pricing too.

Yeah, I thought my driver was large... The magnet on the SV is pretty large in Dia.

If you like your's, just keep it and tell him to buy his own somewhere else.

I obviously like mine. However, that is not what I am getting at. I am asking if the SVS would be better.

Ok I guess I will be the guy on the other side of the fence.....

The drivers you are talking about will blow the SVS out of the water....
Depending on your build layout....
I bought 2 TC-2000 drivers before the prices went up... I am told that 1 single TC-2K will topple the subs I have now (both of them together), which are a SVS-PB12 Plus/2 and a PB12-Plus in the same room.... Which is why I went to the extreme of buying 2 of the TC-2K's.. I was going to build dual passive boxes, but was directed to go with ported..... I'll start out with dual 2K Sonotubes, as the size of 11cu ft boxes are double the size of a PB12-Plus/2... 6.3cuft or 11.3 cuft box with TC-2K drivers... Now the cost of these drivers is nothing compared to the price of a beautifully finished SVS sub box, but the sound quality of the 2K is nothing to shake a stick at here...

Personally I think you will be losing the edge in SQ from the SVS Ultra compared to the drivers you are used to.. But the SVS offers the flexiblilty of PEQ's and Highpass filters, and extremely beautiful finish and customer support, they are very well known for....

Just one mans opinion... do with it what you will.... I will be exploring the DIY from now on... let us not forget, there are tons of other extremly capable DIY drivers out there and available for the right price... CSS is one that comes to mind...

It seems to me, that you are moving, and you have already experienced what the TC-3K can do.. the larger room will be asking way more at 9600 cuft ... Dual monsterous ported encloures would be the first thing I would be thinking about....
I think you may be taking a step down in capabilities from what you currently are running, and will be dissapointed....

Thanks a bunch. After looking at it, I think my sub is plenty and will deliver more than the SVS can offer. I still need to wired the sub down lower than 8 ohms to let the amp really flex its muscle. However, I need to figure out a way to wire the sub to get a lower ohm rating without killing the amp.
