Should I hear constant sound thru my rear speakers?

I have a Yamaha 6130. Am I supposed to hear constant sound thru the rear surround speakers? Or should I only hear sound when it is supposed to be on either the rear right or rear left side?

It would depend what setting you have on the receiver for surround. You would hear sound if you were lets say playing a disc in dolby 2 mode....

With a dolby digital or dts decode, you will not likely hear constant sound from the surrounds, but with PLII you will hear constant sound if your close enough to speakers, and when your supposed to hear something, it will get loud enough to hear from the seating position.

Thanks. I think I have it figured out now. When the receiver is set to Dolby digital I do not hear constant sound, when it is not, I do.
