I doubt it's nitro- most manufacturers had moved on from that in the '60s. Still used car paint, but it was polyester or polyurethane, both catalyzed. Some used Acrylics.

If it looks and feels thick, it's not nitro- nitro dries very thin and you would be able to see the grain as surface undulations if you look closely enough. If it's totally smooth, it's something else. On some guitars, I refer to this as the 'hard candy coating'.
