Serious quesion about artificial 5.1 setup

I have a regular 2 channel reciever that I have 4 speakers hooked up to. 2 on the left, and 2 on the right. Now I was experiementing with this the other day, but I think I created me an artificial center speaker. I added a 5th speaker to the mix, and hooked up the left negative channel with the right positive channel, and now that 1 speaker recieves signals from both the left, and right channel.

So theoretically, did I not just create a artificial center speaker , 2 fronts, and 2 rear? All I would need is a sub connected in a similar way , and I would have an artificial 5.1 surround sound.

Welcome to the 70's

No. All you've done is create a "difference" speaker. In phase left and right signals cancel out and only the out of phase information is reproduced. This is a quasi multichannel effect that was used in the early 70's. One version was offered by Dynaco. You would probably benefit from padding the output down as it most likely is louder then the other two speakers.

So, while it's neither a right or left channel, it's not a "real" channel in the sense that what comes out of it can be predicted.

So I'd probably be better off adding a 3rd pair of speakers and basically putting those two up front, then use the other 2 pairs as suround side, and suround rear correct? So I can have a simi 2.1 suround setup.

Personally, I don't see what that speaker adds but be careful simply adding speakers in a serendipity fashion not recommended by the manufacturer. Doing so just might reward you with the ultimate in high tech silence and perhaps a whiff of smoke.

Actually, I'm surprised nothing happened when you did the first one.

I've been messing around doing this for a while, since my HS days. Never had a blow out. I just experiment to get the best out of what I have at the moment.

If a 2-channel receiver is what you have, then 2 speakers will be the best sound.;)

What four speakers are you using?
Well I'm using two KLH's that have an impedence of 8ohms, and two AKAI (That produce the most base, but not the best pure sound as KLH), that have an indpedence of 6ohms.

This receiver?

Or this one?

You stated you just purchased the Pioneer in Jan, and that it was your first receiver. Then, you stated you just purchased the unit above. The unit you claim you just purchased is not 2-channel. The Pioneer is certainly not 250watts. So, please show me this receiver you are using. I am lost. Here is your last thread: http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18481

Let's keep the BS to a minimum.

No, that reciever still has not came in yet, I'm still currently using my old one. And that NEW 5.1 reciever I didn't get it like I thought I was :-/

So I'm currently using this one - http://videogamecollectors.com/albums/Zerohero-s/Picture_022.sized.jpg

Untile the one you posted above (Not the 5.1 reciever) comes in the mail.

The "BS" comment was a little rude, and out of place. I was being serious, besides, why would I have to lie on a message board especially when I only have 19 posts?

Sorry about the rude part. I just didn't see a unit that puts out 250watts. And I don't see one from that picture. I would not recommend a pro-logic receiver. But, if you really want one, I still have that Onkyo. I have the manual. If you want, I can dig up some information on it.
