Samsung Develops First 40-inch OLED Display

To be revealed at this year's SID show, the new Samsung 40-inch OLED display sports a wide screen pixel format of 1280x800. The new prototype also offers a maximum screen brightness of 600 nits; a black-and-white contrast ratio of 5,000:1; and, a color gamut of 80 percent. Motion pictures with ultra-high quality images can be impeccably reproduced by skillfully employing OLED's rapid video response capabilities for image processing of HD-class resolution. The ultra-thin shape of the panels will allow future TV set designers to create televisions with a total thickness of only 3cm or less. Yowsa, that's progress!

Thanks for the article, Clint.

I'm glad to see that someone is using this technology for HT. I understand that it has huge potential. I've read that displays can potentially become flexible, and can be as large as 500”. Also, if I'm not mistaken, some of the people responsible for OLEDs won the Nobel Prize for chemistry.

Anyway, I'd love to know more about the technology as it applies to video reproduction. Things like refresh rates, resolution, real world contrast, and how they compare to the old standby – CRT.

Hopefully we'll find out in the next couple of years.

I'm hoping the hype eventually meets up with reality (or is that the other way around?) OLED tech has a lot of potential. All the specs suggest it's a CRT-killer and the topping is that it's supposedly going to be cheap to manufacture.

When I get my own place I will really consider this overa DLP projection system, just based on the fact that bulbs are still $149-249 a peice.

OLEDs definately seem to be the future! Although I've heard, that they are having problems with the blue color, 'cos the leds that produce the blue light go out much faster than the other colors (if I remember correctly).

I've been watching the OLED situation with keen interest- I think the technology has the potential to make substantial inroads into all other display types.

All these new technologies are just scary - yet amazing. It has only been (relatively) a few years since flat panel displays even came along and began to dig into the CRT market.

If OLED is able to implement anti-burn-in features right away and have plasma type screen sizes, there is no reason that I can think of to buy plasma over OLED all other factors being equal. The problem is, of course, the reliability of OLED vs. other formats. 60,000 hours seems to be the going rate, and a number way under that just seems unacceptable for the $$$.
