Can I just buy a reciever and hook up my DVD Player Xbox and T.V. and a surround sound package and they'll play with 5.1?

Yes you can. What kind of budget are you looking at for a receiver and surround sound setup? Chances are, you can get something pretty nice, as in much better than a home theater in a box (with the cute little cube speakers) for about the same price.

Ah, yep! Just hook 'em all up throughtthe receiver. That's the ONLY way it can be done.
See? You're not as dumb as you thought you were! :D But, there are better alternatives to most HTIB's though.

HTIB's? I was lookin at the source by circuit city surround sound in a box cause it's only like 80 buck (canadian) I know it likely doesn't have alot power but I'm in an apartment anyway so... My budget's not huge actually it's kinda minimal as the surround sound system is kind of a big purchase in itself but I guess I could stand to drop 50 on a reciever gunna scour the pawn shops I guess. Any start up suggestions or stuff you think I should know would be awesome. Thanks for the help guys

Hmm, at that price I don't think you can go for anything BUT HTiB. I have a proposal: start with stereo, and work your way up to 5.1. Yeah, no instant gratification, but you do get better components and you will have a nicer system in the end. Still, I think you might need to stretch your budget a tad to start with some quality stuff.

Well I'm just a student don't need anything fancy I suspect that in about 5 years I'll have new everything and I'll probably just put whatever I end up getting on my comp. For now I'd be happy just hearing Halo 2 in surround sound even if it is weak. Just wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing instead of wasting money on sh*t I can't use. Thanks very much for the help :)

I'm just a student too. I'm poor after setting up my system, but I plan on keeping it for years and it's already really been enjoyable. I think it was worth every penny. Apparently sometimes my neighbors think it's too loud, but I can't hear them knocking to turn it down :p

I'm poor after dropping a grand on my comp 100 on chair 200 on desk got awesome stuff though oh and 400 on a 32 in flat screen t.v. I know not that big but it's like 6 1/2 feet from my couch so yea that's why no budget for surround sound LOL and I live in an old people building so garunteed I can't have anything too powerful anyways, I know me I'll abuse it. I'd be shaking my head and reading my eviction notice within a month lol

In that case then, you might want to check out computer speakers, particularly Logitech's offerings. They don't have the best highs (not a two-way design, only a single driver), but they can crank out the sound and do pretty well at it. I'm thinking something like this. I would think you plan on using your computer with your system, so they'll work great. I believe the Z5500 system can also decode optical inputs, which is a plus if you ever just decide to hook up a DVD player.

I wanna hook up my t.v. (xbox and dvd player) for now but I figure when I redo my home theatre in a couple years I'll slap this HTIB on my comp
