I think it was actually Beethoven's 9th symphony.

I agree with R&R Ninja. I have a strong background in classical music, and one of my university professors said that the original CD (not the current 700 MB version) was designed to hold Beethoven's 9th.

That is VERY interesting. I would sure like to see some documentation on this. Do you have anything that would support this? I believe you, I just want documentation.

I remember reading this in one of the very first articles about CDs that I ever read, it was basically a Sony/Philips ad more than an article.

According to legend, it was Herbert Von Karajon than advised them (Sony & Philips) to make sure the CD format could accomodate the full length of Beethoven's 9th symphony. I don't have a link right off, either. I've always 'assumed' it was true but I can't prove it.

Well, many versions of the stories had been around for some time. IMHO, the explanation in wikipedia is the most sensible. It's all about competition.

Thanks for the links. From what I can see, Snopes said it best by saying it was undetermined. In other words, it's an urban legend and has not been proven to be correct. In the Compact Disc Story pdf off of the Wikipedia entry:

It mentions on page 3, right in the middle, "There were all sorts of stories about it having something to do with the length of Beethoven's 9th Symphony and so on, but you should not believe them." (Kees A. Schouhamer Immink, AES Fellow, Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven, The Netherlands)

That answers the question for me. Pure Urban Legend, no more, no less.

However, this is interesting. I searched for the version of the CD that they are talking about, the Herbert von Karajan version, with him conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker orchestra, and here it is:

try putting up acoustic panels or some curtains up to absorb some of the high end.
and maybe calibrate your speakers, usually alot of this can be controlled by acoustics traps
do a search on Bass traps or Acoustic panelling. If you are a serious HT person try readyacoustics.com. There is alot of info on this subject on audiohalics and hometheatershack regarding this subject. Maybe in stead of a EQ which if anything you shoulod not even need, but get an analyser and check out the frequencies in your room and hook a parametric eq up. So you can flatten out the runaway frequencies in your room
