Hi All:

This may be a silly question, but...

I have a chance to get a great deal on a new RX-Z9. My question to the experts out there would be: Would you get the 'older tech' Z9 receiver or the 'new tech' RX-V3800? And why? The Z11 is out of my price range, so it comes down to these two.

Thank you for your opinions!

RX-V3800.

HDMI, decoding of the latest audio formats.

The RX-Z9 was a great receiver in it's time but at this point, unless you have no use for HDMI or a BD player in the near future, it's a dinosaur.

agreed. 3800 with external amps will trounce the Z9.

Wow, unanimous! Now Amp question?

Thank you all for the responses and 'mini-education'.

As far as external amps, would you recommend using any of the 3800's internal amplification, or go with 3 externals amps for center, front L & R, and surrounds?

I do have an Adcom 5500 I've been using as part of my setup which still includes, if any of you can remember, the Shure HTS 5200. Great processor but since one of my Yamaha amps that drove my surrounds just died, I figure it's time to upgrade to today's standards rather than spending $ on an amp for my dinosaur! The 5200 has been awesome and served me well....but it is 2008 now!!

Look forward to, and appreciate your thoughts and opinions...

front 2 channels or 3 (if you want to be sure) will be sufficient. unless your surrounds dip low.

What's the use of having a 3800 if you use external amplification? Get the 1800 instead. Same features as far as I know.

The primary differences are:
-10 more watts per channel.
-USB connection
-400 bucks!!

That was my point. Who cares.
Actually the USB can be used for internet radio. Again, big deal. It's probably the most useful of the upgrades, but not for that kind of money.

Original

I'm the guy who asked the original 2 questions...
I don't have a 3800, and I appreciate your advice. Don't need usb, so
gonna check into the 1800. You're right, $400.00 will get a bd player, but since I have one, then maybe towards another Adcom 5500.....

What's up with Emotiva anyway? Never heard of it until looking here. Only info seems on this website....Maybe the Audioholics group help design it? That would be cool....

Maybe old school, but I considered the Adcom amps to be the best around for the money...

Love the thought of the Z11.....But I don't need 11 amps, and it seems overkill for $3350.00. Any other thing I would miss out on by going to the 1800 or 3800?

Thanks again for all your excellent input :)

The 3800
The USB connectivity is a waste, too many restrictions on devices that are supported along with folder depth and size.

If you plan on running Ethernet to the receiver the net radio function is very nice. Since using it I stopping using my PC for streaming radio.

If you don't care about the small boost in power, some of the upscaling features and the network features then the 1800 is the same machine almost.

GUI on the 3800 is much nicer.
Ethernet port on the 3800 may not seem like a big deal; it wasn't to me when I bought it.
However, I was reading some posts from owners over at AVS who were making a case for internet radio. So, I decided to try it.
VERY glad I did. I was very pleasantly surprised at how good it is.
I used a Logitech Play Link to connect the 3800 to my wired router. Works like a charm. It's so good, I connected my 2700 (in a second system), also using a Play Link.
So don't count out the ethernet port on the 3800, unless you really don't like internet radio. I really didn't care much about until I tried it.
BTW, the Play Link, unfortunately, is discontinued. I bought one last year to use with a Tosh XA2 player for updating the firmware, but never got around to using it. I had to search and search and search for another one, and finally found one a few weeks ago, NIB on craigslist for $50. The Play Link consists of two wireless "black boxes". One connects to my router, the other to the receiver, and that's it. No configuring to do, and because they were manufactured as matching pairs, they only "talk" to each other, so no security stuff to worry about.

I have a reservation in for the XPA-2. They're supposed to start shipping in March. So, if you can hang on until then, I'll for sure post my results using it with the 3800, driving Energy RC-70 mains.

I'd be VERY interested in hearing your opinion, as I have a RX-V1800 and RC-70s as well.
