So i have a rx-v3900 everything works on the unit and the remote works with everything else except the 3900. I was thinking it might be the ir sensor. Any Ideas on if it is repairable or bypass ideas.

Do you mean the remote for the 3900 works for other devices, like a dvd player, but doesn't work to control the receiver itself?

It's possible the IR sensor on the receiver is bad, but not likely.

- Use fresh batteries in the remote.

- Make sure there is nothing blocking the sensor on the receiver. If the receiver is in a cabinet with smoked or very thick glass the IR emitter on most factory remotes is often not strong enough for reliable operation through the glass.

- Most factory remotes also have a very narrow angle over which they transmit the IR signal, typically +/- 20 degrees, so when off-axis it may not work as well.

The remote for my Onkyo DVD player didn't work worth a crap unless I was right up in front of the player. My URC MX-350 universal remote will work from practically any angle even from well over 30 feet away in the kitchen. So you might consider purchasing a good universal remote.

some receiver remotes also have some switches: audio, video, etc.

try the other toggles

Yamaha remotes also have a 2 choices of remote ?frequency bands? for lack of a better term.
I believe that switch is on the lower left corner of the remote.
I'm at work so i can't look at mine but the default is the number 1 setting. This setting must match the setting in the manual set-up.

Sorry to be so vague, but I'm going by memory.

I know my Z7 remote only works from the sweet spot. Directly in front of the darn thing.:( Other than that, it's sweet.

It's just an ID sent along with the codes so you can have more than one of the same device and control them independently.

That's a good suggestion to check the ID and also make sure the remote is in 'receiver/amp' mode per mike c's post.

Given that, it does sound like the IR reciever took a dump.
Is it still under warranty?

No So I need to find someone to work on it. I would like to find someone local but I have no clue where to take it. I wonder what something g like that would cost to repair that. Or does anyone know how I would get a part number for that. Could I use a external ir sensor going into the remote in on the back?
