Are you sure you're still not getting HDCP and HDMI confused? I see nothing on hdmi.org about HDMI 2.3 in any case....

You are correct it is HDCP 2.3, and HDMI 2.1, which is stupid as HDCP is supposed to define the copyright protections and issues surrounding 8K. Then they added the requirement that the HDMI associated with HDCP 2.3 have 300 to 500 ma available on pin 20. They should have changed the HDMI version associated with HDCP 2.3 but they didn't. This just adds to the confusion of this lousy system.

All I do know is that if a unit is pre HDCP 2.3 then the HDMI port will only provide 30 to 50 ma on pin 20. Due to this absurd nonsense a port labelled as HDCP 2.3 it may or may not provide 300 to 500 ma on pin 20. So if you have an AVR or AVP with an HDCP 2.3 video output, then you have to read the specs carefully or contact the manufacturer. I suspect however, that if the 300 to 500 ma current rating is not in the specs it probably does not.

Basically it is totally unacceptable that such a vital spec. is left to chance.

Connecting an active cable to a port that on provides 30 to 50 ma of current is a serious issue and could well be very costly.

I find this situation unacceptable, and it needs to change fast.

Meh, like marketing cables by hdmi spec (let alone hdcp ). OTOH can you imagine the confusion out there with "components" if it weren't for even such flexible standards?

The fact that HDMI exists soley to make copying difficult is ridiculous- they seem to believe that copies are made one at a time, in real time, from a source to a recorder. Apparently, they haven't heard that bootleg outfits have existed for all kinds of formats and digital discs are saved to a computer, connected to many recorders and the data is dumped.

HDMI= Horribly Defective Multimedia Interface.

I'm not, but the people who set the standards and regs are!

The voltage on the pin 20 should not be part of an HDCP spec. So they should have changed the HDMI spec at the same time. I suppose their excuse is that this spec only involves output specs and not input specs.

I think really the root cause of all this is having HDCP and HDMI specs. They should just pick one or the other and combine them.

2.1a apparently applies to pro equipment. But 2.1 HDCP outputs are supposed to supply 300 to 500 ma. They should as this is the 8K output and you don't want the extra connection of a voltage inserter in the signal chain.

I would say if you want 8K and length to the TV requires an active cable DO NOT buy the device unless it can provide 300 to 500 ma on on pin 20 to power the cable.
